Three Ringgold County homemakers will be honored today (Thursday) at the rural Homemakers Recognition Program and
Luncheon in Atlantic. The ladies, who will be guests of the Atlantic Junior Chamber of Commerce, are Mrs. Robert
BECK of Kellerton and Mrs. Carroll GEIST and Mrs. L. H. GRAY of Mount Ayr. They will be accompanied by Helen
STREEBIN, county Extension home economist.
Arlen F. HUGHES announces his candidacy for the office of county attorney, subject to the will of the Democrat
voters at the primary election on June 1, 1964. Mr. HUGHES is seeking re-election to a third term as the principal
law officer of Ringgold county.
On Sunday 13 members of the Mount Ayr Junior Chamber of Commerce devoted their time and effort towards building a
fence at the newly located city dump grounds. Those who assisted with placing the fence of two-strand barbed wire
were Norman MILLEDGE, Kenneth JOHNSON, Bill SMITH, Billie KELLEY, Sam WILLIAMS, Arlen HUGHES, Raymond HUTCHINSON,
Don NARIGON, Jim MAHAN, Loren WINEMILLER, Larry DVORSKY, Bob EVANS and Bill MONAGHAM.
Two seniors in the Mount Ayr Community high school, who have enrolled for study this fall at Iowa State University in
Ames, have been awarded scholarships. They are Eugene RICKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon RICKER of Diagonal, who will
study aerospace engineering, and Phillip C. GERARD, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Clifford GERARD of Mount Ayr, whose
curiculum will be mathematics.
Sixteen Ringgold County men spent Monday in Yorktown and assisted in clearing away the debris left in the wake of a
tornado which struck the town Sunday evening about 5 p.m. and caused damages approximated at $1.5 million. The men
who provided chain saws, a dump truck owned by the city and other equipment for removing trees and other debris from
the devastated area were Sheriff Elbert STRANGE, Elza FETTY, Vernon McGAHUEY, Bob KIBBE and Ted DEFENBAUGH of
Mount Ayr; Lyle HOSFIELD, Duane GROSE and LeRoy WOOD of Ellston; Roger GROSE and Dale GREENE of Tingley; Jim
JONES and Rex SHAHA of Kellerton; and Dean RISSER, Clyde HOGUE and Alfred and Laverne ADKISSON of Diagonal.
