For the second time in five years Mount Ayr Record-News publisher Alan SMITH was been named one of the top
columnists in newspapers in Iowa. The Mount Ayr Record-News has been a frequent winner in news writing, sports,
reporting, column writing and advertising contests in recent years.
Scottish heritage was the focus for the Ayr Days celebration over the weekend. Prince and princess for the celebration
were Joel JENNINGS and Morgan DREDGE. Rhona SMITH from Paisley, Scotland, represented Scotland in the parade, riding
along with daughters of KCCI-TV reporter Rick SWALWELL. Crowned "Baby of the Year" in the Ladies Unlimited baby
contest at the Ayr Days celebration Saturday was Nicole MINNICK, daughter of Ed and Colleen MINNICK of Kellerton.
Forty years ago 140 southern Iowa shareholders combined with Iowa State University in Ames and the United States
Department of Agriculture staff to establish an experimental farm site near Beaconsfield and put together a program
in which agriculture research for a "better Iowa" could happen. Today, Thursday, Sept. 15, 1988, the ast field day
will be held at the Shelby-Grundy Research Center near Beaconsfield with special ceremonies commemorating the close
of the farm for research purposes.
There was an estimated $13,000 in damages to a 1984 Porsche when it swerved to avoid a calf on the road, struck
loose gravel, went out of control and over an embankment. Peter HAYSE of rural Mount Ayr was northbound in the
Porsche nine miles southwest of Kellerton on P-64 about 9 p.m. Sept. 8 when the accident happened. HAYSE had some
injury to the head and upper torso and was brought to the Ringgold County Hospital by ambulance, kept overnight
and released.
Sister Bernadine PIEPER will celebrate her golden anniversary next Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Missouri. Bishop William
BULLOCK of Des Moines will offer the mass and preach.
Results were received this week on the ribbon placings of Ringgold county entires in the Iowa State Fair market
beef show. Winning blue ribbons were the following entries: DeAnna FARIS, Mount Ayr, crossbred; Andrea JACKSON,
Mount Ayr, crossbred; Tory SHAY, Maloy, Angus; Cory WILLIS, Mount Ayr, crossbred, and Lonnie VOTAVA, Diagonal,
Simmental. Brian BICKEL of Clearfield had a red ribbon corssbred in the market beef show.
