Tyler WILLIAMS is the new superintendent for the Mount Ayr Community school district -- effective with the 2001-02
school year. That step in the transition to a new set of administrators was made Monday night when a contract with
WILLIAMS was approved by the school board. Four staff members had applications for the district's early retirement
program approved at the board meeting. Applying for early retirement were Mark LARSON, Phil BURMEISTER, Dave STILL
and Kathy AKERS.
Yoshimasa KUNITAKE, the 18-year-old son of Yoshiomi and Sayoko KUNITAKE of Fukuoka, Japan, is a foreign exchange
student staying with Carla and Phil JOHNSON of Sun Valley Lake and attending Mount Ayr Community high school. He has
been active on the Raider basketball team and plans to go out for golf this spring.
A new name has been selected for the fall celebration in Mount Ayr now that the Scottish theme has been retired.
From a total of 31 suggestions, the name "Autumn in the Ayr" was selected as the name for the festival. Nicole DENNEY
was given the $20 prize for naming the celebration, but returned it to the chamber. Janis DENNEY introduced
Sheila SHAFER as the new co-chairman for the event.
Four Mount Ayr Community Raiders qualified for the district wrestling tournament with second place finishes in
sectional tournament at Interstate 35 Saturday. Advancing are Dan REASONER, Joey KING, Blake HAUGLAND and Andy FORD.
A Diagonal student is among students advancing on to the district wrestling tournament at Guthrie Center. Wes STARLIN, who
wrestles with the East Union team, won the crown at 135 pounds at the Class 1A sectional in Truro Saturday.
