Bobbi HUNT of Diagonal was named a Presidential Award Winner at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, IL last week. She is one of 12 4-H members from the nation given the prestigious honor and scholarship.

Following the lead of 600 churches in the United States and other peace organizations in 70 countries around the world, the First Christian Church of Mount Ayr has placed a five-foot peace pole in the church's courtyard on the southwest corner of the square. The pole will be on display during the "Window Walk" set for Saturday, Dec. 17, in Mount Ayr. The pole was dedicated Sunday, Dec. 4, under auspices of the worship committee headed by Marilyn MONDAY.

Mount Ayr is the featured town of the week on "Whad'ya Know with Michael Feldman," a program which runs on many National Public Radio stations across the country.

It's homecoming time for the Grand Valley Community high school students this weekend, with activities centering on Friday at the school. Homcoming king and queen candidates have been chosen. Candidates for homecoming queen are Angie GODDEN, daughter of Rod and Connie SMITH of Kellerton; Teresa GAGE, daughter of Jerry and Betty GAGE of Kellerton; Gina BROWN, daughter of John BROWN and Sharon O'DELL of Kellerton; and Amy AKERS, daughter of Monte and Carol AKERS of Kellerton. King candidates include Bill LEEPER, son of Dave and Doris LEEPER of Kellerton; Mike VANDERFLUGHT, son of Donald and Hazel VANDERFLUGHT of Grand River; Jeff HEWLETT, son of Albert and Phyllis HEWLETT of Grand River; and Scott MUNYON, son of Bill MUNYON of Kellerton.

A Mount Ayr women's bowling team, captained by Margaret BISHOP, came home a first-place winner from a November tournament at Sky Lanes in Omaha, NE. Team members also placed high in singles, doubles and all-events. Rosemary SCHLAPIA paced the team effort with a 647 scratch series. She had games of 168, 254 and 225, bowling on a 161 average. Helen HUNT had a 476; Margaret BISHOP, 451; Fern REYNOLDS, 430; and Sandra BASTOW, 412, for a 2,416 scratch and 3,082 handicap total.

Two Mount Ayr Community Raider wrestlers earned top spots in their weight division at the Central Decatur invitational wrestling tournament in Leon Saturday. The Raider winners included Cody SHAY, champion in the 130-pound class, and Scott ENGLAND at 135 pounds.

Tory SHAY picked up a championship medal at the Fresh-Soph Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Creston Saturday, Dec. 10. Casey SCOTT and Lonnie SWIGART won consolations rounds to place third and Bob WILT and Mike HYMBAUGH finished sixth. Kevin MILLER and Jared MURPHY also aprticipated in the tournament.
