A plaque to honor "27 years of dedication to the children of our district" was presented to outgoing superintendent Phil
BURMEISTER at the school board meeting Monday night.
Some customers of Alliant Energy in Mount Ayr had power outages Tuesday. Several customers in the eastern part of
town had a power outage from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. A large section of the western part of Mount Ayr including
the square area and hospital were then hit with a power outage from 3:30 to 5:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Approximately
514 customers were affected by the second outage, caused by a bad breaker at the substation in Mount Ayr.
Three Ringgold county organization received a total of $33,300 ingrants from the Pillar grant program from Lakeside
Casino and the Clarke County Development Corp. in a ceremony in Osceola Monday night. The city of Mount Ayr received a
grant of $12,800 as part of a $24,800 effort to resurface the tennis courts at Judge Lewis Park. The city of Tingley
received a $10,000 grant to help pay for $30,000 worth of renovations of the Tingley community building. The Southern
Iowa Parks and Recreation and city of Kellerton received a grant of $500 to help with refinishing the gym floor in the
former Grand Valley gymnasium which is used for many community activities.
Gladys JOHNSTON will be celebrating her 105th birthday Tuesday, June 19, at the Clearview Nursing Home. Gladys was born
near Caledonia in 1896 and graduated from Mount Ayr high school in 1915.
A number of familiar faces will not be roaming the halls in the Mount Ayr Community school district next year as some
staff retire and others move on to new position in other districts. Among staff leaving are David STILL, physical
education and health teacher and coach; Phil BURMEISTER, superintendent; Kathy AKERS, business teacher; Julie
WEIDENTHALER, junior high science teacher; Paul GODWIN, pre-school special education teacher; Angie LONEY, vocal music
teacher; Mel MILLER, alternative school instructor; Brian WIEDENTHALER, technology coordinator; Mark LARSEN, math
instructor, athletic director and coach, and Randy ATHAY, at-risk coordinator, physical education instructor and coach.
