John H. POTTER, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr, was critically injured in a tractor-auto collision
Friday evening, one and one-half miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway 2 (?). The driver and sole occupated of the car, Jerome
KEMMA, 24 years of age, of Bancroft, suffered minor cuts and bruises. The Rev. POTTER, who had been discing his garden in
Mount Ayr, was returning a John Deere tractor with a 10-foot tandem disc to its owner, Roy LARSON, who resides north of
Mount Ayr, when the accident happened at 8:10 p.m.
Arrangements are being made for all children in the first and second grades of the schools in Ringgold county to receive
the Salk polio vaccine within the next few weeks, announcement of which was made yesterday by Jim BURGE, county
cahirman of the 1955 March of Dimes. First and second grade school children were selected to receive the vaccine because
of the high polio incidence in their age group and because their accessibility in schools would speed completion of the
caccination program.
Herman HAUSHEER, M.D., will come July 1 to Mount Ayr, where he will be associated with Dr. D. E. MITCHELL in the practice
of medicine and surgery, announcement of which is made by Dr. MITCHELL. Dr. and Mrs. HAUSHEER and their 11-month-old son,
Brian, will occupy the John LANE residence property.
Raymond G. BARKER, city clerk of Mount Ayr, has been appointed by Governor Leo A. Hoegh to the position of Ringgold
County chairman of civil defense. The appointment puts BARKER at the head of the county civil defense council which will be
formed soon to utilize equipment, personnel and facilities of the county in the event of an emergency.
The West End Market and the Cross Service Station and Garage on Highway Nos. 2 and 169 in west Mount Ayr were entered
early Sunday morning and $120 in cash and about $100 worth of merchandise were taken. It was the fourth time in four and
one-half years that both places had been burglarized.
Mrs. Cleo HAMPTON suffered leg and knee injuries when the 1952 Plymouth auto in which she was riding overturned early
Sunday morning in the Mount Ayr business district. She is a patient in the Ringgold County Hospital. Sheriff H. P. TODD
reported that Charlie STRINGHAM, brother of Mrs. HAMPTON, was driving his car east on Monroe street when he lost control
of the car, which skidded and overturned in the alley west of the Security State Bank. The car was demolished. Vera
MILLSAP, an occupant of the car and a daughter of Mrs. HAMPTON, and Mr. STRINGHAM escaped injury.
