RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 13, 2001

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Early reports Tuesday said that four commercial airplanes were hijacked and destroyed. Three airplanes were purposely flown into buildings causing untold damage and a fourth one crashed in a field.

Joe and Julie ROUTH of Mount Ayr were in Washington, D.C. Tuesday morning for Joe to take some continuing education for his nursing home administrator's license. Julie had gone to visit the White House Tuesday morning but had made it back to the hotel later Tuesday.

Dianna TRIGGS, daughter of Darlene TRIGGS of Mount Ayr, was in Washington, D.C. and planned to visit the White House Tuesday as well.

Leigh KELLEY, daughter of Jim and Patty POLLOCK of Mount Ayr, lives a couple of blocks from the Pentagon where one of the planes crashed. The KELLEY family was in Florida, however.

A grant to help in installation of a modern restroom and shower facility and waste water system at Fogle Recreation Area in Diagonal has been received. A grant for $24,445 will go to the project through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. A hearing on the alleged cattle scam involving George YOUNG of Grant City, MO and affecting Rio Baca Ranch in Ringgold and Decatur counties was cancelled in Decatur county district court last week. The hearing planned for Friday, August 31, was cancelled because the matter is now in the hands of the federal bankruptcy court.

The hospital began providing kidney dialysis for its first patient on August 10. The unit will continue with one patient until the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals conducts an inspection.

Ringgold county sheriff's department was involved in a raid early last Tuesday morning. Steve John KEPHART, 36, was arrested at his residence in rural Mount Ayr and charged with six counts -- two counts of willful injury, one count of assault while participating in a felony, one count of going armed with intent, one count of carrying a dangerous weapon and one count of possession of an offensive weapon. KEPHART was transported to Adams County Jail. KEPHART had a previous court order to turn in his weapons. Because of the court order, the weapons on the premises were confiscated.
