RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 13, 1984

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Another successful Appreciation Days celebration brought a weekend crammed with activity to Mount Ayr Friday, Saturday and Sunday. From merchants sales to new events like the go-cart Grand Prix races and the slippery watermelon races, there were activities for all ages, with the MARC '84 goodwill committee again working hard to put together an entertaining celebration. Named queen of the annual festival was the South Page Community band queen contestant Karmen BURSEN. Other candidates included Tammy WALTERS of Mount Ayr Community high school and Gina HEWLETT of Grand Valley Community high school.

Lyle MINNICK for Ringgold county sheriff and Darlene MORGAN for auditor will be the names placed on the November general election ballot as the Demorcrat party's nominees.

Eva PATRICK, 101, a Mount Ayr resident, was presented with a certificate from Governor Terry Branstad honoring her as a member of Iowa's elite class of centenarians recently. Kenneth MORROW, chairman of the advisory council to the Area Agency on Aging in area 14, made the presentation at Mrs. PATRICK'S home in Polk Villa Apartments.

Rev. and Mrs. Jim SCHUTTER and their two daughters, Judith, three and one-half, and six-month-old Johanna, escaped serious injury but probably totaled their car in an accident about 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7.

Fire destroyed a barn at the Jack HUGHES farm, where HUGHES lives, two miles southeast of Kellerton in a Friday noon, Sept. 7 blaze. No contents were in the barn to be involved, according to Oscar REED, Kellerton fire chief, who with his crew were called to the scene.

Dr. D. E. MITCHELL and Mrs. Maurice CARR were re-elected president and vice-president, respectively, of the Mount Ayr Public Library board of trustees during a meeting held Sept. 4.
