Prizes were given after judging was done during the MACHS homecoming parade Friday afternoon. The winning class float was
the entry by the freshman class "Raiders are nailing down a victory." The D.R.A.M.A. club at the high school had the
best orginazational float. Winning the commercial division was the Ringgold County Hospital's suggestion at the
Raiders "Put their heart into it." Rancea SMITH was crowned queen and Billy HIGHTSHOE was crowned king of the
Mount Ayr Community high school homecoming celebration last week. SMITH, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob SMITH of
Mount Ayr ws crowned at half-time of the football game Friday night and HIGHTSHOE, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David
HIGHTSHOE of Mount Ayr, was named king at ceremonies Thursday night.
Eight Mount Ayr Community high school students will be taking part in the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band when it
performs in the Cotton Bowl parade in Dallas, TX January 2. MACHS prepresentatives in the band this year include
Nicole LANDPHAIR, flag team; Andrea MEKUS, one of two drum majors for the group; Kelli MASON, tenor saxophone; Ryan
SMITH, snare drums; Bryan SCHAFER, tuba; Shonn MAPES, tuba; Jeremy CULBERTSON, tenor saxophone; and Ron SCHAFER
trombone.
Dr. Duane MITCHELL of Mount Ayr is in Iowa Methodist Medical Center following a Wednesday, Oct. 5 accident at his farm
northwest of Mount Ayr. He is suffering from a fractured fibula, below the left knee, and severe muscle damage to the
left leg and a fracture bone in his right foot. The accident to Dr. MITCHELL happened when he climbed up on the back of
a wagon of beans. When the wagon started to roll backwards, he jumped off, fell and the wagon ran over his leg and
foot, according to members of his office staff.
Robert J. SMITH of Beaconsfield was among 29 who graduated from the 14th Iowa Department of Public Safety Basic Academy
in a ceremony at Camp Dodge near Des Moines Friday, Sept. 30. The graduation ceremonies were attended by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Jim SMITH; his sister, Debbie; his grandmother, Mrs. Mildred SMITH of Tingley; and friends -- Mr. and Mrs.
Gary PETERSOHN of Tingley, Mr. and Mrs. Curt LININGER of Shannon City and Sgt. Mike METZGER. His father was privileged to
pin on Robert's badge. Robert, 24, is thought to be the first of the area young people to enter this line of work since
Dean PEPPMEIER, then of Beaconsfield, who startes service in the Iowa Highway Patrol in the 1950's.
Coach Dave STILL, head coach of the Mount Ayr Community Raider football team, had a surprise celebration given for him by
the football players after the homecoming victory over Corning Friday night in honor of STILL'S 100th career win as a
coach. STILL has been coaching football for 20 years - 10 years in Mount Ayr and 10 years in Mound City, MO. In that time he
has coached two unbeaten teams.
