Hotel Leon, owned by the late Mark RIDDLE, was recently purchased by Clinton and Mabel RICE, of this city,
possession being given October 1. Mr. and Mrs. RICE, owners of the McCullough Motor Co., the Clinton Motel and Hotel
Mount Ayr, plan several improvements to the 60-room motel.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold DAVENPORT and son, Kenneth, who have been residing on the Burr NEWTON farm in Washington township,
will assume management of the hotel on November 1.
Iowa teachers were advised to become more interested in politics, according to an opinion expressed by Roy Jennings,
director of public relations during a conference of county officers of the Iowa State Education Association held Sept.
29 at the Iowana Hotel in Creston. Representatives from Ringgold county were Wilbur MILLER of Diagonal, president; Mrs. Elgin
BISBEY of Mount Ayr, secretary; Mrs. Vera DAUGHTON of Kellerton, publicity chairman and County Superintendent of Schools
Vera F. DICKENS.
Senator W. T. PRENTIS of Mount Ayr will be he initial speaker on the morning program of the 21st annual meeting of the
Iowa Taxpayers Association to be held Oct. 21 at Hotel Savery in Des Moines. Senator PRENTIS is chairman of the Iowa
Tax Study Committee, created by the 56th General Assembly for the purpose of studying in Iowa's tax structure and making
recommendations for needed revisions. Senator PRENTIS became a member of the state legislature in 1939 and during his
tenure has served as chairman of many important legislative committeed, included among which was the Senate Tax
Revision Committee during the past season. He has also been a member of the Budget and Financial Control Committee. His talk
on the "Purposes and Aims of the Iowa Tax Study Committee" will pertain to the work which is presently being done by the
committee.
Fifteen neighbors went Thursday afternoon with corn pickers, tractors, wagons and elevators to the Guy Miller home in the
Diagonal vicinity and in a few hours had all of his corn in the crib. Mr. MILLER went Monday to Des Moines, where he entered
the Veterans Hospital for surgery. Refreshments of sandwiches, cookies and coffee were served by Mrs. MILLER. Sharing
in the "good neighbor" deed were Gin ROUTH, Floyd TAYLOR, Dean DAVENPORT, Lee DAVENPORT, Lloyd GOINS, Leo CARSON,
Bud BROWN, Mr. BOLINGER, Donovan McMANUS, Lee TAYLOR, Wayne TAYLOR, Ray CARSON, Dick BAKER, Delbert ROUTH and Conrelius
BROWN.
John D. WARIN, owner of Marycrest Farms, Maloy, was elected Ringgold county chairman of the National Farmers' Organization
at a meeting of township representatives held Monday evening in the courthouse assembly room in Mount Ayr.
