RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, December 13, 1979

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

District chairman Paul SMITH presented the Gene SICKELS family with a certificate and an aerial photograph of their farm for being named winners in the district's conservation achievement program at the Ringgold County Soil Conservation District's annual awards meeting.

Mount Ayr volunteer firemen were called to three fires during the past week. One was a burning railroad right-of-way southwest of Benton, the second was a fire that caused damage to the roof and to a flue at the Willis NEWBY residence in Mount Ayr, and the third was a fire in another blue burn out at the Sam MERRILL family home of Kellerton.

Three directors were name to three-year terms at the regular monthly meeting of the Mount Ayr Community Improvement Club last Thursday. Elected by the group were Tom MORRIS, Malcolm EIGHMY and Bill FRENCH. Retiring members, who cannot succeed themselves, are Ken JOHNSON, Robert WARD and Gerald BABCOCK.

When Francis VIRDEN first started as a rural letter carrier 32 years ago it cost three cents to mail a letter. When he retired Dec. 1, 1979, it took 15 cents. He began on Kellerton's route one which was 54 miles, which he covered for 10 years. Then he carried route two mail until the two routes were consolidated. When he retired, his route had been boosted to 101 miles. There were 15 families on route one when he started that were on his route when he retired. He has served under seven postmasters. VIRDEN said that he could cover his route in about five hours when the weather was good (something which always has been a worry to postal employees in Iowa). When he got back to Kellerton he did some barbering in his own shop. This barbering is something he plans to continue doing.

A 10 percent base salary increase for Mount Ayr Community teachers was approved at a school board meeting held Monday evening, Dec. 10. This means the base will be $11,150 in contrast to last years' $10,200.
