Ronald Lee HENDERSON, 17 years of age, was fatally injured Saturday afternoon about 3:30 p.m. in a motorcycle-truck
accident east of Kellerton. Young HENDERSON, who was spending the weekend with his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. D. J.
HENDERSON, was killed when his motorcycle struck the rear of a truck on Highway 2. The youth attempted to pass to the
right of a 1953 GMC truck, driven by Ray McFARLAND of Kellerton as it was making a left turn off the highway.
The motorcycle hit the rear of the truck and the youth's body was found 78 feet from the point of impact. The motorcycle
traveled a distance of 120 feet and went through a fence after the crash. The Kellerton community is uniting in the
provision of a memorial fund for Ronnie HENDERSON, who was instantly killeed in the Saturday evening crash. D. J.
HENDERSON, father of the young man, is pastor of the Kellerton Assembly of God church, and a well-loved citizen in
that community.
Elbert STRANGE, of Bellflower, CA, underwent surgery Wednesday of last week for the removal of his left hand, which was
crushed and burned about two months ago in an accident at the Alco Aluminum Company plant, which is located near
Los Angeles, CA. This information was received last week by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. STRANGE of the Diagonal
vicinity, in a telephone message from their son, Delbert, who also resides in California. The accident, which caused
Elbert the loss of his hand, happened when he was changing the water in the pipes at the plant. An operator, who had not
been informed of the procedure, closed the cylinder switch and caught Elbert's hand in a press with only five-eighths of
an inch clearance, weighing 6,000 pounds and having a heat temperature of 800 degrees.
Two men escaped serious injury Saturday morning about 8 a.m. in an accident which involved three vehicles and which
happened near the Lesanville corner, east of Mount Ayr on Highway 2. They were John HIGDON, of Leon, who was driving
a gravel truck, and Jack LYTLE, of Nebraska City, NE, driver of an Otoe Food Co. semitrailer, loaded with groceries.
Both were driving west on the highway. Sheriff Homer P. TODD said that a 1955 Plymouth driven by Myron WILLARD,
of Royal Oak, MI, a student at Graceland College in Lamoni, had stopped on the north side of the highway and he and a
college classmate, Archie HILL of Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, were watching a veterinarian treat a sick cow in a field near
the road. As HIGDON approached the parked car, he slowed his truck in order to pass and while attempting the pass,
the rear of the truck was struck by the semi. Both trucks were extensively damaged whne they went into a ditch on the
south side of the road and the trailer upset.
