Two new businesses had openings in Mount Ayr this past week and Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce members were on hand for ribbon cuttings. Herrington Sports, a new sporting goods store, has opened just off the northeast corner of the square. Mitchell Jewelry opened with a grand opening in its new building south of the Mitchell Drug Store.

Mount Ayr Community high school's concert band received a division "I" rating at the state large group contest in Pleasantville Saturday. The band had earlier received a "I" rating at the state marching band contest.

Mount Ayr Community elementary school will be among eight schools which will be recipients of the 1988-89 First In the National in Education (FINE) recognition at a ceremony at Terrace Hill, the Governor's mansion, in Des Moines Saturday. Some 50 representatives of the town and community are expected to share in the recognition ceremony.

Mike GREENE of Mount Ayr was named as general manager of Rideta Electric Cooperataive following a decision made at a special Rideta board meeting May 2. The new position was assumed by GREENE Monday, May 8. The cooperative services part of four counties -- Ringgold, Taylor, Decatur and Union -- and has 2,700 customers. It employs 15 persons with an additional 13 neighborhood meter readers completing the staff.

Beaconsfield was one of five Ringgold County towns where water tanks were set up Tuesday and Wednesday to provide emergency water supplies for towns without water. Governor Terry Branstad came along with National Guardsmen when they brought a 1,850-gallon tank to Beaconsfield Monday and filled it from a tanker.

Together the Ringgold County Hospital and the Harold Hughes Center, Inc. (alcohol and chemical abuse treatment center) are working toward the dissolution of a contract. At the Ringgold County Hospital board meeting Monday night, May 8, the board gave Hospital Administrator Gordon WINKLER authorization to complete the final phase of the dissolution on behalf of the board. The contract's original intent was to be binding for two successive three-year terms. It is in the last year f the second term. It was further stipualted that after that time it was to be renewed annually.
