Ruth Ann PLACE, who will be a senior this fall in the Mount Ayr Community high school, has been selected to attend
Hawkeye Girls State by Ringgold Unit 172, of the American Legion Auxiliary. This announcement has been made by Mrs.
Donald STULL, president of the auxiliary. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe PLACE of Mount Ayr, Ruth Anne is a junior
member of the auxiliary and has served as chairman of that group.
Mayor Sim C. RICE announced the appointment of James WOOD as night marshal to succeed Don STULL, who recently resigned.
Mr. WOOD assumed his duties Monday night. Mr. WOOD recently sold his barbershop in Mount Ayr to Bob SMITH and Bob
EVANS, possession having been given Monday. The business will be operated under the name of Bob's Barbershop. They will
open the shop for business Saturday after spending the week remodeling and installing an air conditioner.
Five masked men accosted the driver of a local bread truck Thursday morning at Kellerton and forced him to drive one
and one-half miles east of town to the Glenn BEAR farm, where the contents were dumped on the road. The incident occurred
during the bread truck drivers' strike in Des Moines and it is presumed that the five men were sympathizers.
Len BETH has been elected president of the Mount Ayr Lions Club, to succeed Elmer ROE, who capably served in that
capacity during the past year.
Kay WATSON, Ringgold county 4-H president, went Sunday to Iowa State College (present-day Iowa State University) for
a pre-convention workshop. Shirley GOINS, the winning better groomed girl contest at the county Rally Day, is
representing the county in the state contest this week. Chaperones for the 18 county girls at convention are Mrs.
Burl SACKETT of Mount Ayr and Mrs. Lawrence LOUDON of Diagonal.
Little Billie Dean, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim POTTORFF of Lotts Creek township, accompanied by his dog, wandered away
from home, trudged through fields, around ponds, crawled through fences and attracted by the light in the Charles
SWANSON farm home, arrived there about 8:45 p.m. The SWANSON farm is located a mile west of the POTTORFF farm. Mr.
and Mrs. POTTORFF were unaware of his absence for sometime since the father thought he was at the house and the
mother thought he was with his father at the barn. Neighbors and friends joined in the search and the fire alarm
siren was sounded in Mount Ayr about the time Billie Dean was found.
Mrs. Earl RUSK assumed her duties Thursday as town clerk of Mount Ayr. She was recently appointed to the position to fill
the vacancy caused by the resignation of L. E. THOMPSON, who is seriously ill in the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. Mrs.
RUSK has served as receptionist in the dental offices of Drs. C. C. and C. W. LAWHEAD.
Japp DALBEY of Grant City, MO won the annual Mount Ayr Open Golf Tournament held Sunday on the local course. DALBEY
shot a one under par 107 for 27 holes of medal play and had a 36, 36 and 35. This is the 12th time he has won the
Mount Ayr Open Tournament.
