Named the overall winers of the kiddie parade during the Fourth of July celebration in Mount Ayr were two
brothers, dressed like Uncle Sams in red, white and blue. Forest and Linden HAWKINS are the sons of Mr. and Mrs.
Rick HAWKINS, of Mount Ayr.
The three finalists in the Women Unlimted organization's baby contest attended the baby contest crowning ceremony
during the Fourth of July celebration in Mount Ayr. Courtney CANNON was named the contest winner. Runners-up were
Adam TRIGGS and Daniel STULL. Area residents voiged for the winners by dropping money incans with pictures of the
contestants in Mount Ayr businesses.
Newest employee at Rideta Electric Cooperative in Mount Ayr is Pat WALSH of Varina. WALSH began work on June 24, 1985, as a
lineman. WALSH will be filling the vacancy left when Lyle NICHOLS retired January 1.
Diagonal community groups are sponsoring a benefit fund-raiser for the proposed Ringgold County Group Home at the
Diagonal community building Friday, July 12. The event is sponsored by the Diagonal Lions Club, the Diagonal
Community Betterment Committee and the Diagonal Housing Corp.
Seven people have been elected as the Diagonal centennial committe for the community's 1988 centennial observance.
Frank GUNSOLLY, Louise KESSLER, Arlene SOBOTKA, Lois HUNT, Donna WATSON, Ron SCHLAPIA and Barb STEPHENS were elected
as members of the committee by the more than 55 people who voted in a straw poll.
Students in the Mount Ayr Community elementary and junior high schools showed "normal growth or better" over the
previous year as measured by the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, says elementary principal Larry GILES and high school
principal Clyde SUMMERS.
