Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr
The Diagonal Community school district and how it has adapted to survive as the second smallest school district in
the state will be featured in a segment of Iowa Public Television's Living in Iowa program this week. The
program shows how Diagonal, a town of 298, has managed to sidestep the consolidations that have shrunk Iowa's
4,873 school districts at the turn of the last century to just 375 at the beginning of this one.
Easily recognized by her shining smile as a student at Mount Ayr Community high school, Rea Maria SCHAFER is the
18-year-old daughter of Judith and Alex SCHAFER of Fribourg, Switzerland. While in Iowa, SCHAFER is staying with
Steven and Elora GOSHE at Sun Valley Lake.
A Mount Ayr Community Raiderette ranks among the top in the state in several statistics in the listing through December
31 compiled by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Jolene FROST ranked 19th in the state in blocked shots with
2.17 a game. She ranks 61st in the state in assists with 3.67. She is 101 in the state in rebounds with 7.83 per
game. She ranks 174th in the state in scoring with 11.67 points per game and 86th in the state in shooting percentage with a
.521. Randi REYNOLDS was on the list of shooting percentage for players averaging less than four field goals per game. She
ranked sixth in this group with a .629 shooting percentage.
It doesn't happen very often, but it happened to Raymond GREEN. Floy DRAKE and GREEN were playing cribbage Friday
afternoon at Clearview Nursing Home when DRAKE dealt a perfect hand. GREEN says it was an honest deal because they
used a card shuffling machine.
