Friends and neighbors went Saturday morning with tractors, corn pickers, and wagons and picked corn for Lloyd ENGLAND
of the Tingley vicinity who Wednesday of last week lost his right hand in a corn picker accident. Mr. ENGLAND was
released Sunday morning from the Greater Community Hospital in Creston. Sharing in the good neighbor deed were
Bud BAGLEY, Kenneth BARNETT, Doyle BARNETT, Merle and Donald DUKES, Clarence WEEDA, Lloyd WEEDA, Forrest KLINE,
Hershel MORRISON, Franklin NICHOLS, Charles DEAN, Roger MORRISON, Don and Jim SMITH, Wade HUNTER, Lial SALTZMAN, David
and Bobby ALLEN, Carl, Larry and Ed FORD, Donald GOUT, George PUTNEY, Earl ECKERMAN, Ben MARRS, Edarl TROXELL, Dick FARRELL and
Howard ENGLAND.
Lyman J. WALKER II, Ringgold county 4-H member, has been awarded a trip to the 34th National 4-H club Congress to be
held in Chicago, IL. November 27-December 1. The 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman G. WALKER, who live near Kellerton,
was named state winner in the 4-H soil and water conservation program in recognition of his accomplishments and
interest in this work and on the basis of his eight-year 4-H record.
Two employees of the Iowa Southern Utilities Company received 15-year service pins during the company's ninth annual
award party held Monday evening at the Mount Ayr Country Club. They were Alvin VARNER, district manager, and Perry
KASTER, electrician, who were presented their pins by Rober GREENLEAF, vice president of the company.
Hilding SHUM of Grant township suffered two broken bones in his right leg between the knee and ankle in an accident
while digging postholes Tuesday afternoon. The accident happened when he caught his overalls in the power takeoff. He is
a patient in the Ringgold County Hospital.
The barn on the Herman CLOUGH farm, four miles northeast of Tingley, which is farmed by Sherrill STEPHENS and family,
was destroyed by fire of unknown origin Saturday night. Ross CRAFT, son of Mrs. STEPHENS, was returning home about
fifteen minutes to midnight when he noticed light in the barn which he assumed was from an electric light bulb. Upon
investigation, he found the haymow engulfed in flames. The barn, 58 x 60 feet, was completely destroyed. The loss also included
2,600 bales of hay, 1,00 bales of straw, 750 bushels of oats and tools. The family dog also perished. Saved from the
flames were a calf, a ram, an Angus bull, a milch cow and some oats. The barn and contents were insured.
Charles SKINNER assumed management of the Hy-Vee Food Store in Mount Ayr the first of this week. He succeeds Elmore
ERICKSON who was transferred to Bethany, Mo to manage the store in that city.
Neighbors baled hay Friday, October 8, for Walter HARDEN of Rice township who is ill. Participants in the "good
neighbor" deed were Ainslee TRIGGS, Roy SWARTZ, Mark ELLIOTT, Paul RICE, Raymond UMBARGER and Lee FLETCHALL.
Mrs. Cora BIRD and son, Velmar, of the Diagonal vicinity, were surprised Monday afternoon of last week when friends
came to their farm with pickers, wagons and elevators and picked their corn. Mr. BIRD has been unable to pick his
corn due to illness following severe attacks of bronchial asthema and virus infestation. Sharing in the "good
neighbor" deed were John TRIGGS, Charles BENNETT, Eldon RICKER, James BROWN, Lawrene LOUDON, Aubrey KIRKPATRICK,
Bob McCREARY, Cecil KELLER, Wallace LOUDON, Elmer STARMER and Loren CAMPBELL.
Mrs. John TRIGGS spent the afternoon with Mrs. BIRD and they served pie, cake and coffee to the men after the corn
picking was complete.
