Not only has Dr. Charles LAWHEAD, family dentist, served Ringgold countians, and those with roots here, but his
influence has been felt as a professional on state committees and at his alma mater, the University of Iowa, Iowa
City. His retirement now, precipitated by health considerations, brings to a close a dental career in Mount Ayr of
almost 40 years.
Two Ringgold county senior citizens were among the top spellers at a spelling bee held in Afton Saturday,
qualifying them for a spelling bee at the Iowa State Fair this summer. Quentin ABARR of Tingley and Violet GROSE of
Ellston were among the top three spellers at the contest. Paulyne MEADOWS of Kellerton was one of the judges for
the contest.
Rev. Keith G. LESS of Mount Ayr was named District Beef Cook-Off winner in the 1985 Iowa Beef Cook-Off contest.
The Beef Cook-Off is heing held on May 24 in the Younkers Metropolis in Des Moines.
Two long-time Mount Ayr Community school teachers will be leaving to make their home in Red Oak. Walter COBB,
for 20 years a MACHS industrial arts and more recently auto mechanics instructor before resigning this spring,
has accepted a new position with Douglas and Lomason, a company that makes car seat frames. COBB will be working
in the engineering office to improve production methods. He is to start June 10. His wife, Betty, resinged
Monday of this week as mathematics instructor after 16 years on the MAC staff.
