Jim DENHART of Mount Ayr and Roger HIME of Leon spent last week in Washington, D.C. studying governmental
procedure under the direction of John KYL, representative in congress from the fourth Iowa district.
In DeKalb's Five-Acres Selected Corn Growing Contest in Ringgold county, H. W. COMBS of Redding was the first place
winner with a yield of 131.01 bushels of Variety 3x1, announcement of which has been made by Earl MERRITT of
Kellerton, DeKalb dealer. Other winners with high yields were Earl STANLEY of Kellerton with a yield of 128.09 of
Variety 3x1 and Keith C. LININGER of Shannon City with a yield of 112.38 of Variety 661.
The outlying junior high schools of the Mount Ayr Community school district have completed basketball play for the year
with the Beaconsfield-Ellston girls taking the girls conference championship crown. Redding and Delphos-Maloy
shared a title as they tied with 4-1 records for the boys championship.
Brightening the Washington, D.C. scene this week are 96 Iowa farm women on their third biennial tour to the
nation's capital, included among whom is Mrs. L. H. GRAY of Mount Ayr.
John W. SHAFER, associate in the PETERSEN Insurance Agency, had been elected assistant secretary of
Ringgold Mutual Insurance Association. SHAFER, who is active in farming, is also a member of the board of directors
of Rideta Electric Cooperative.
The 42nd anniversary of the founding of the American Legion will be observed locally on Monday, March 13.
