Milton HENDERSON was re-elected president of the board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district at the
reorganization meeting of the board held July 1. The board's offer of a contract for a three-year period was accepted
by superintendent C. Arthur HANSEN. The contract provides for a salary of $8,400 for the school year of 1959-60, with
an increase of $400 for the two succeeding years.
Jackie MAIN showed the champion 4-H Jersey heifer in the District Dairy Show held June 27 in Creston. Jackie is a member
of the Junior Farmers 4-H Club and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin MAIN of Mount Ayr. Larry SCHAD exhibited the reserve
champion Jersey. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl SCHAD of Shannon City and a member of the Jefferson 4-H Club. Lyle
FARIS, also a member of the Junior Farmers 4-H Club, exhibited in the Holstein and Guerney division and placed
fourth and seventh in strong competiton in both classes. The three 4-H members showed five heifers in the first District
Dairy Show.
Pearl DAVIS and Willie CORLL turned in the low score to win the two-ball foursome golf tournament held Sunday afternoon
at the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club. Eleven couples participated in the nine-hole affair. Other flight winners
were Fern REYNOLDS and Robert (Hap) RICHARDS, Mary NEWTON and Jack COATES, Marge YASHACK and Dick YASHACK, and Fra ROE and
Russ DAVENPORT.
Robert LUPHER, 24, of Tingley, has been a patient in the Greater Community Hospital in Creston since early of the morning
of July 4 when he suffered a wound in the neck, inflicted by a pellet from a shotgun. Von TULL also suffered wounds from the
blast but did not require hospitalization. LUPHER and TULL and two companions, Robert PALMER and Tom OWENS, all of
Tingley, were shooting off firecrackers about 1:30 a.m. in northwest Tingley when Floyd GUESS, apparently annoyed by the
noise, contributed to the fireworks display by firing his shotgun. No charges have been filed, pending availability
of all persons concerned.
Kenneth HERREN, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. HERREN, of Athens township, has been selected as a member of the bass section
of the national F.F.A. chorus, which will sing at the National F.F.A. Convention to be held October 9 through October
16 in Kansas City, Mo.
The dwelling occupied by the Merwyn JOHNSON family, on the George GREENMAN farm, two miles west and four miles south
of Kellerton, was partially destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon. The fire, of unknown origin, started in the attic
and was discovered by the JOHNSON family about 2 p.m. Twelve memebers of the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department
responded to the alarm and managed to save most of the house except the roof. All of the JOHNSON furniture was
removed from the house and the dwelling was insured.
