RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 8, 1960

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

The Ringgold County 4-H livestock judging team placed second and the crop judging team, third, in competition Saturday at the Iowa State Fair. The livestock team placed second to Adair County in the contest, which included 81 teams. Ringgold County scored 1,522 points, compared to 1,577 by the winning Adair team. Dale BICKEL, Bob ALLEN, and Lyle FARIS of Mount Ayr were members of the livestock judging team. Milt HENDERSON and Len BEATH coached the team.

Joe DENHART, Royce RINEHART and Jerry BARKER of Mount Ayr and LeRoy CREES of Beaconsfield were members of the crops team. Melvin GRAY of Mount Ayr again coached the boys. No other county in the state matched Ringgold County's record in the two contests.

Both Ringgold County girls 4-H demonstration teams received red ribbon ratings at the Iowa State Fair last week. Beck JAMES and Helen RAUCH, members of the Sunshine Workers 4-H Club, presented their demonstration, "A Slip and a Trick" and Marie ANUGS and Sheryol SHIELDS gave their safety demonstration, "No Room For Falls." They are members of the Clover Belles 4-H Club. All four girls receive blue ribbon ratings on their record books. Mrs. Lloyd ANGUS accompanied the girls to the fair.

A steer exhibited by Joan LYNCH of Maloy was the fourth highest selling steer in the baby beef auction held at the Iowa State Fair. Joan received $26.75 per hundred for her Angus which placed fourth in the show. Only three steers out of over 200 sold exceeded the price Joan received for her steer.

The grand opening of the new four-lane bowling alley, known as Lucky Lanes, in the I.O.O.F. building in Mount Ayr, will be held Saturday, Sept. 10. The new entertainment center, owned and operated by Mount Ayr Lodge No. 169, I.O.O.F., is already being well patronized.

Mevlin T. GRAY, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. GRAY of Mount Ayr, is one of 38 young Iowans taking part in the Tenth Annual Iowa Farm Youth Tour September 6-10. The tour is sponsored by the Iowa Development Commission, the state's promotional agency, and members are leaders from 4-H, Future Farmers of America, Farm Bureau young people and rural Boy Scouts. This is the second consecutive year that the local chapter of Future Farmers of America has been represented on the tour. In 1959, James SMITH, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis SMITH of Tingley, was selected as a member of the tour.

Bob ALLEN of Mount Ayr and Craig LYNCH of Maloy have received special awards from the American Shorthor Association as a result of their showing at the recent Ringgold County Fair. They received a medal which said, "Champion Shorthorn - 1960." ALLEN had the champion Shorthorn heifer and LYNCH the champion Shorthorn steer at the Ringgold County Fair.
