Three Mount Ayr Community high school students will attend the national Business Professionals of America conference in
Annaheim, CA after qualifying at state contests last week. Three students placed in the top 10 in the state
contests to qualify to advance to the national contest. Melissa WINKLER placed third in the state in the management
concepts test. Rachel HALEY place fourth in the state in the spreadsheet concepts and applications contest. BreAnn
WEEDA placed fifth in the buisness knowledge skills and business law contests and eighth in the financial math and
analysis contest to advance. Also taking part in the state contests during the convention were Andrea TAYLOR and
Courtney GRAVES.
Members of the conference champion academic day team from Mount Ayr Community high school were Elijah TERRELL,
Melissa WINKLER, Amy HYNEK, Josh SMITH, BreAnn WEEDA, Krissy POORE, Janice WEDDLE, Clara TERRELL, Sean KILGORE,
Matthew WEEDA, Daniel GRAHAM, Mark CRAIN, Brad WILSON, Drew INGRAM and Luke STILL.
Two Mount Ayr Community high school boys basketball players were named to all-conference teams and five more were
named academic all-conference when Pride of Iowa elections were announced this week. The Raiders placed Matt LYNCH
on the first team and Jaren RICKER on the second team for the all-conference selections. In addition, Josh SMITH,
Travis HINZ, Nick JOHNSON, Jaren RICKER and Wes ALLEN were named to the academic all-conference team.
A Mount Ayr resident has been invited to receive the 2000 Trophy Fish print at the 26th eastern Iowa Sportshow
scheduled March 8-11 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. Monica TAYLOR of Mount Ayr has been invited to receive the
award, which recognizes trophy fish caught in Iowa and registered with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources
during 2000. TAYLOR caught a 22-inch largmouth bass in Ringgold county last year.
A Mount Ayr Community FFA chapter member qualified for the state FFA contest at district contest at the Des Moines
Area Community College in Ankeny Saturday. Landi McFARLAND received a gold medal and advancted to the state
contest in radio broadcasting. Receiving silver medals and not advancing were the parliamentary procedure team, conduct
of meetings team and greandhand quiz team.
