January 1 marked a changing of the guard in leadership for the town of Diagonal. Robert SCHLAPIA, who has been in leadership for the Diagonal community for 20 years, is stepping down and the new mayor will be Lowell JOHNSON. JOHNSON will take over as mayor after moving to Diagonal a couple of years ago. The JOHNSONS have two boys -- Tyler, who just received his bachelor's degree from Browne College in Minnesota, and Nick, a student at AIB in Des Moines.

Staff and administration of Mount Ayr Health Care Center held a surprise retirement party for Kay WELLING last week. WELLING has been working in a nursing home setting for more than 35 years. She stated in 1968 at Sunny Slope on Highway 169 until it closed. She then moved to Mount Ayr Health Care Center when it opened under the administration of Joe GROSS.

Winners of the local hoope shoot contest included Christian OVERHOLTZER, Ashley PHELPS, Megan DOUBLEDAY, Amber LILIENTHAL, Johnathan TRIGGS, Jacob STILL, Drake DECKER, Molly BUDACH, Jordan LARSON, Daniel SHOWALTER, TIffany WIMER and Ashlie GREENE.

A Diagonal student received a bachelor of science degre in mechanical engineering from South Dakota Tech during commencement ceremonies in Rapid City, SD in December. Mike GOODALE of rural Diagonal received his degree at the winter commencement ceremonies for the engineering and science university. GOODALE is the son of Jon and Kathy GOODALE of Diagonal.
