The first baby of the new year at Ringgold County Hospital didn't waste any time in appearing on the scene. A baby boy, Dustin Ray, was born at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at the local hospital. He weighed six pounds, 8 3/4 ounces and was 19 inches long. His mother is Romona PAGE and father is Ray ELY. His sister's name is Stephanie PAGE. While the new baby is the first of 1988, there were 25 babies born in RInggold county during 1987, according to clerk of court Rollin NOBLE.

A come-and-go miscellaneous shower for Rob NOVAK of Benton, who lost all his possessions when his trailer home burned December 26, is planned for Sunday, Jan. 10, at the Benton community hall. NOVAK lived two miles north and a half mile east of Benton in a trailer home, which was completely destroyed in a fire which was discovered about 12:25 p.m. December 26.

It's homecoming at Diagonal Community high school this week with spirit week activities leading up to the girls and boys basketball games Friday night and the homecoming dance, which follows the games. Candidates have been chosen for king and queen for the festivities as well. Senior candidates include Terri STEPHENS, Scott STEPHENS, Jari Jo LARSEN and Britt FLETCHER. Junior attendants include Clete BOYER, Chad AUSTIN, Lisa CARSON and Stacy GARRETT. Sophomore attendants are Tina ANDERSON and Jimmy STRANGE and Kerri HOWLAND and Darin STEPHENS are freshman attendents.

Lynn RINEHART was in Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines early this week, recovering from broken bones in his left arm received in an accident at the Mount Ayr Oil Company Saturday morning, Jan. 2. RINEHART, who recently purchased Mount Ayr Oil and began work there two weeks ago, was thought to have been working around a car lift when the accident happened, breaking both bones between the elbow and wrist of his left arm.

Jean TAYLOR, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles BASTOW and a graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, has been named coordinator of manaagement development at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL., which is a 600-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the southern Illinois University chool of Medicine.

Kendra PICKER, a sophomore forward at Tarkio College in Tarko, MO, is off to a fast start in Women's basetball this season. PICKER is the daughter of Jim and Judy PICKER of Glenwood. Judy PICKER is the former Judy PINKERTON, a graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school in 1963. She's the niece of Sharon BOWEN and granddaughter of June STEINMAN of Delphos. PICKER is leading the Lady Owls in steals with four a game, averaging six rebounds a game and making free throws at a 64 percent clip for the college girls' squad.
