Preliminary enrollment figures show a big decline for Mount Ayr Community while Diagonal and Clearfield school districts
showed increases over the same time last year. In the Mount Ayr Community school district, comparable enrollment were
down 69 students or 8.7 percent, the biggest drop in 10 years. Comparable the elementary figures show enrollment in the
elementary and junior-senior high school at 719, down from 828 at the same time last year. In Diagonal, preliminary
enrolment jumped 11 students or 10 percent to a total of 117, up from 106 at the same time last year. In Clearfield,
preliminary enrollment was also up 11 students or 22 percent to 60 from last year's 49.
A three-week People to People student Ambassadors Program trip to Australia and New Zealand was a great experience for
Misty ERICKSON, a junior at Mount Ayr Community high school this year.
A portion of the story about the Diagonal and Mount Ayr Community whole grade sharing program and the Diagonal school
district originally broadcast last winter will be repeated next week on Iowa Public Television. In a special edition of
Living in Iowa, host Morgan Halgren and Des Moines Register reporter Jennifer Dukes Lee will update education issues.
Part of the story about Diagonal will be included in "Education Update: A Living in Iowa Special."
Three Raiderette letter winnersare back for the Mount Ayr Community girls cross country team this year. Letter winners
included Kinda FISHER, Jana JOHNSON and Jamie GOINS.
Mount Ayr horseshoe pitching aficionado Marv WOOLUMS really cleaned up in action at the Iowa State Fair recently. WOOLLUMS
came home with no fewer than five state championships titles in action at the fair and a lot of hardware to prove it.
As well as five first place plaques, he received a memorial trophy and a championship patch. His is the only patch like
it in the state.
Jerry SCHEMMEL, radio voice of the Denver Nuggets since 1992 and a survivor of the United Airlines FLight 232 crash in
Sioux City in 1989, will be the speaker at Trinity Christian Church Sunday, Sept. 9. SCHEMMEL survived the plane crash
which killed 112 of the 296 passengers on board. After escaping the burning plane,he re-entered the wreckage and rescued
an 11-month old baby. He is the author of the book "Chosen To Live," which has been featured in many national publications.
Clint SPURRIER, Ringgold county attorney, met with the board of supervisors to discuss courthouse security. A few
decisions were made for installing a camera and extra lights. A camera will be placed at the west door entrances along with
a buzzer to the sheriff's office. Signs will be posted at all other entrances of the courthouse. "This buzzer will allow
for the dispatchers to let people in from the office on the second floor," said Lloyd BEDIER, county supervisor. "This
will help with courthouse security." Lights will also be installed but how many and when were not decided.
