Enrollment slipped by 23 students in the Mount Ayr Community school district and by four students at Grand Valley, while Clearfield has 141 students this year, preliminary figures this week show. Enrollment is 687 in the Mount Ayr Community school district, down from 714 in the district at this time last year. Grand Valley Community school district has an estimated 211 students, four less than the 215 there at this time last year.

In the Mount Ayr Community school district, there are three school board seats up for election, with two candidates running for each position. Facing each other for a three-year term from director district one are incumbent Gary PETERSOHN of rural Tingley and Cindy MORGAN of rural Kellerton. Seeking a three-year term from director district two are Darius (Di) BOONE and Shirley HIGHTSHOE. [Third seat wasn't listed.]

Elizabeth SCHNOOR, daughter of Roger and Jane SCHNOOR, passed her state nursing boards and is now a registered nurse. She works at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham, NC.

Democratic congressional candidate Jerry Fitzgerald brought his campaign for fifth district congress to Ringgold county this week by speaking at a reception near Maloy Thursday night. A number of Fitzgerald supporters attended the event, held at the home of Cleo and Regina LYNCH, and sponsored by the Ringgold County Fitzgerald for Congress committee.

Ronald Arthur MAHERS of Murray entered a plea of guilty to two charges of escaping from custody, four counts of burglary in the second degree and one charge of willful injury when he appeared August 28 in Ringgold County district court before Judge James BROWN of Osceola.

Another new business has opened in Mount Ayr. Mount Ayr Paint and Body Shop, owned by Sam VANDERJAGT, has opened in the building just west of Jim JOBE Chevrolet-Buick-Pontiac, Inc. along Highway 2.

Two Mount Ayr businesses had grand openings recently. MARC '84 board members were on hand for ribbon cutting ceremonies at Roberts Auto Body in the former Ames Cross service station and at Franz Impl. Co., Inc.

Mount Ayr Medical Clinic, P.C. is opening an office in Grant City, MO beginning Friday, Sept. 7, it was announced this week. Dr. Duane MITCHELL of Mount Ayr will be staffing the Grant City office, located where the late Dr. MATTESON practices, on two or three afternoons a week initially. Other staff members may be involved in the future, according to Dr. Sudhir MARAFATIA. Dr. MITCHELL grew up in the Grant City, MO area.
