RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 06, 1979

Sandy Main, Mount Ayr

A storm ripped through southern Ringgold county the night of August 28 leaving havoc in its wake. Mrs. Leola ANDERSON, who lives four miles southwest of Blockton, was trapped in her house while the storm shifted the house off its foundation, blew shingles off the roof and damaged the siding. Outbuildings were also destroyed at the farmstead.

Other damages in the neighborhood were a machine shed roof at the Lewis NAILL farm was blown off, a barn at the Kenneth JENNET farm was destroyed, a roof was blown off a barn at the John STROBURG farm and large bales of hay were ripped apart and strewn over a quarter of a mile at the Clark STROBURG farm. At Mrs. Eldon STROBURG'S Country Beauty Shop a haircut was in progrss when the storm took out the electricity. Mrs. STROBURG finished the cut by candlelight and advised her patron to return the next day if the results were unsatisfactory.

The warning siren sounded in Blockton and the storm seemed to content itself with just uprooting trees in town. On the northeat edge of Blockton at the Bill HUNT farm, two uprooted grain bins just missed the house where the family was huddled inside. The HUNTS were unable to get to their basement because of the force of the wind against the basement door. Three other grain bins were moved from their foundations.

Sometime during all this mess, thieves visited the Blockton Cafe, taking cartons of cigarettes and some money collected for pool and pinball machines and the MFTA Exchange were they lifted a tape player, tapes and some gas.

There was a theft of about 800 bushels of beans at Iowa Grain in Mount Ayr some time during the night of August 28-29. State Bureau of Ciminal Investigation officials and Ringgold county sheriff's officers are investigating.
