A covered wagon that passed through Ringgold county last Wednesday on a cross-country trek from Fort Edward, NY to Los
Angeles, CA drew a lot of attention. The travelers left New York April 1 and hope to reach California in September.
A support vehicle carried second team of horses to help make the trip easier. As it was, the wagon was covering 20 to
30 miles a day. The travelers spent the night at Elk Chapel in Decatur county Tuesday and planned to reach the David
BARKER farm south of Diagonal by night fall.
Pooling wool
from producers in seven counties in Iowa and Missouri has meant that producers can receive as much as a quarter a
pound over the current prices an individual producer would have gotten. That was again the experience of the South
Central Iowa Lamb and Wool Growers annual wool pool where 28,000
pounds of wool was brought to Mount Ayr, sold and loaded on semi-trucks. Average price was 64-cents a pound.
This is the fourth year the group has done the pooling, with wool this year purchased by R. H. LINDSAY Co. from Boston,
MA for shipment to South Carolina, where it will be made into rugs.
Top students in the Mount Ayr Community junior high school eighth grade class were Jennifer STEPHENS, Marcy MILLER,
Melissa CLARK, Dana CAMPBELL, Kelli MASON, Jenny SHIELDS, Jill TAYLOR, Tricia TRULLINGER, Dawn HUFF, Scott SMITH,
Laurel MOE and Scott ENGLAND.
