Fifteen students of the Mount Ayr Community high school participated in a preliminary state speech contest Saturday in Murray.
Of the group, 11 were given top ratings, which entitles them to enter a district contest.
Those who received I ratings and the divisions in which they appeared are:
Shirley SAVILLE and Jeanne MARLER, humorous declamation
Louise BURCHETT and Marcia NOLAN, dramatic declamation
Dale BICKEL, ortarical declamation
Connie SANDAGE and Ruth Anne PLACE, poetry reading
Max ANDERSON and Mary MATTHEWS, radio speaking
Bill REED, extemporaneous speaking
The debate team, which also entered in the contest, was automatically designated to appear at the district contest in
Harland because of no competition in this area. Members of the team are Mary MATTHEWS, Paul HANSEN, Edwin HOFFMAN and Bill REED.
Two ratings were received by Pattie RICE, Alice SICKELS, Sandra HUNT and Judy McGAHUEY.
Arlen F. HUGHES, a native of Ringgold county, announced the opening of his law office in the MOFFET building on the
west side of the square in Mount Ayr. Mr. HUGHES, who is 25 years of age, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. HUGHES of
Athens township.
Milt HENDERSON is one of the 20 Iowans to be honored this (Thursday, February 4, 1959) evening at a banquet in the Collegiate
Presbyterian Church in Ames by the Block and Bridle Club. The group is being reconized for its outstanding contribution to
agriculture in Iowa. NOTE: How many of us remember Milt HENDERSON and his work with 4-H kids? I do!! - Sharon R. Becker
John D. MILLER of Blockton has been named by the Ringgold County Farm Bureau board of directors as its official delegate
to accompany 99 county Farm Bureau leaders March 6 - 10 on their annual tour in Washington, D.C. MILLER and his wife, Laura,
own and operate a 200-acre farm three miles southwest of Redding in Clinton township. They have one son, Tom, who attends
college.
The sixth ranking girls team in Iowa slapped the Mount Ayr Raiderettes Friday night at Guthrie Center in a doubleheader
with the varsity game won by the host club, 78-47, and the preliminary contest, 59 to 50.
