State senator Jeff ANGELO and state representative Cecil DOLECHECK shared information about the legislature in their final
legislative coffee of the season, held at Mount Ayr Diner Saturday.
The Mount Ayr Community high school gymnasium was transformed into a tropical island for the annual prom celebration
Saturday night. "A Night in Paradise" was the theme for the evening and the walk into the gymnasium and dance were
held among the tropical items from a grass hut to a waterfall and from an island with a treasure chest to flamingos and
palm trees.
A dozen Ringgold county residents were among a group of 35 Iowans who traveled to Lombard and Aurora, IL Thursday and
Friday to observe how Character Counts! programs have been put into place in schools and communities in that area. Those
making the trip were Tessa BARNES, Tracy HENRY, Amy WHITTINGTON, Ron SCOTT, Randy ATHAY, Martha
LANDPHAIR, Nicole DENNEY, Mike DOUBLEDAY, Rob OLSEN, John BRILLO, Lynn RINEHART and Diane ENGLAND.
The new Kellerton Bird Conservation Area, a 740-acre area of ground two miles west and one mile south of Kellerton, was
dedicated in ceremonies Wednesday, April 25. Over 50 people were on hand for
the ceremony at the site which is the primary prairie chicken site in the state. About a dozen prairie chickens use the
area for booming.
Judy HENSLEY was one of nine ISU Extension staff members from southwest Iowa who were honored for outstanding professional
service at Awards Day and Spring Convocation in Ames on April 16.
Nine clients of the Ringgold County Supportive Services program took part in the Special Olympics in Creston April 21.
Those participating were Dan REYNOLDS, Joan ROUTH, Linda JACKSON, Dennis RINEHART, Ralph HAMPTON, Anita GILSON, Joe HALEY,
Alan FORCE, Sharon LESAN. Those helping to coach the athletes were Paula RICHARDS, Helen KAUFFMAN-MOORE, Cathy McGAHUEY
and Denise GOLLIDAY.
A former Ringgold county resident has been named sheriff of Louisa county in southeast Iowa. Curt BRABY of Morning Sun,
formerly of Mount Ayr, was named by the board of supervisors there to replace retiring sheriff Herb EUTSLER. He is the son
of Jane and Roland BUCK of Mount Ayr and a Mount Ayr Community high school graduate.
Mekenze BISHOP of Mount Ayr has been chosen by American Legion Auxiliary Unit #172 of Mount Ayr to attend the annual
session for the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State to be held June 10-15 on the campus of the University of
Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. BISHOP is the daughter of Randy and Christine BISHOP of Mount Ayr.
Eight new members of the Parnassus Chapter of the National Honor Society were inducted at a ceremony in the Mount Ayr
Community high school auditorium Monday night. New members included Amber SHIELDS, Kim LARSEN, Melanie JACKSON, Sean
KILGORE, Kelsey ALLEN, Landi McFARLAND, Holly MEESTER and Mekenze BISHOP.
Six Mount Ayr Community sixth graders received awards for practicing and preparing as members of the fifth and sixth
grade bands. Presented with the certificates by assistant principal Rob OLSEN were Zach LYNCH, Katie KEMERY, Kelsey
MEESTER, Brian INLOES, Wendy DOOLITTLE and Emily UHLENKAMP.
