Chief among news events of 1984 was the economy, which continued to stumble along during the year, if not trip and
fall a couple of times all together. The closing of the Tingley State Savings Bank was probably the most dramatic
of the stories having to do with the poor farm economy here and the bank closing because of agricultural loan
problems led the list of agricultural-related stories here this year.
Elbert STRANGE, sheriff of Ringgold county for 24 years, retired effective Monday, Dec. 31. STRANGE began his term
as sheriff January 1, 1962, with LaVerne WORTHINGTON as deputy. Maxine WORTHINGTON was added to the staff in 1974 and
a second deputy became necessary in 1975. Serving in this second deputy position has been Lyle MINNICK, who will take
over as sheriff effective January 1. Also serving during the years were Claire FOLTZ and Jerry JONES.
A benefit dance has been set Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Blockton community hall in Blockton to benefit Jack and Amy SMITH
and family who lost almost all their belongings in a fire last week. The home of the SMITHS northeast of Blockton
was destroyed by fire Saturday, Dec. 22, about 11 a.m. Family members include a 17-year-old daughter, a 12-year-old son and
a baby as well as Jack and Amy SMITH.
Winning first place in the commercial division of the Mount Ayr Resource Commission (MARC'84) lighting contest
this year was the display of Guys and Gals Beauty Salon in Mount Ayr.
