RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 03 & 06, 1915

by Chanse Hall, Mount Ayr Record-News

R. E. FISHER & Company has decided to install a five, ten and twenty-five cent department in his store. The entire north side of the store will be stocked with goods of this class and nothing else will be handled in that part of the store, the higher priced goods being transferred to the south half of the present quarters.

The board of directors of the Mount Ayr Creamery has contracted J. A. TAYLOR, a highly recommended butter maker of Illinois, to serve in that capacity in the local creamery. L. POHLE, who has been butter maker since the creamery started, recently resigned his position.

The waterwork superintendent, Earl LONG, and other workmen are putting in the water connections on Depot Street this week. Connections will be make on every street in the city where paving is to be laid as provided by a recent resolution of the town council. The work will be completed in time for the contractors to begin the paving.

Mayor H. A. FULLER issued a portfolio to H. C. BEARD Friday afternoon by which he comes city attorney to fill the unexpired term of Mr. FULLER, who was elected mayor when H. M. MILLER resigned last week.

The Community Club has assured the board of supervisors that the club would build hitching racks if the county would pave the part of the street where they are to be placed and this the county will do gladly. The iron fence around the courtyard will probably be extended from one post to another. Visitors will be surprised when they "come home" next spring and find the streets paved with brick, the teams standing on solid, dry surface and the old fence, which is now beginning to lean to one side, gone, and instead of the plank walk, which is placed around the park between the tieing racks and fence, the well kept courtyard lawn will meet the pavement.

The library board recently appointed by the mayor and approved by the town council met recently and reorganized. Officers are Maud SPENCE, president; Mrs. R. S. BEALL, vice-president; Mrs. Sam SPURRIER, secretary; and J. A. STEPHENSON, treasurer. Other members of the board are Mrs. H. H. TEDFORD, Mrs. C. R. KEATING, H. H. WILSON, F. E. SHELDON and Bert TEALE. STEPHENSON, WILSON, TEALE and SHELDON were named as a committee to find suitable grounds for the erection of the new Carnegie Library and steps toward securing such grounds will be taken at once. A tax levy of 31/2 mills was also fixed by the board.

KELLERTON - Members of the All-Star ball team, which will wear the Kellerton uniforms during the biggest and best reunion ever, are Peanut COSWELL, Maloy; Curly LENT, Beaconsfield; Chas. JACKSON and Asa HARGIS, Mount Ayr; Bud HANEY, Creston; Porter HAVELY and Bert SMITH, Kellerton; C. C. IVES, Knowlton; Lester HANTHORNE, Stanberry, MO.; Jim BUTCHER, Davis City; and Ralph BRITTAIN, Humeston.

BIRTHS

  • KELLERTON - Mr. and Mrs. A. H. BEEDE are the parents of a fine little daughter, born to them on July 30.
  • DIAGONAL - Mr. and Mrs. Roy WILLIAMSON are the proud parents of a baby girl, born July 28.
  • DIAGONAL - The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glen OVERHOLSER on July 30 and left an eight and one-half pound baby girl. Papa Glen has been stepping pretty high since and his face is all smiles.
