RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 2, 1960

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Six seniors of the Mount Ayr Community high school were awarded scholarships during the senior class day program on May 23. They were Garry WION, Barbara BARKER, Ann MILLER, Mary Ellen CORLL, Betty BRAND and Connie SANDAGE

Garry WION placed second in the discus throw at the annual Nebraska Junior A.A.U. track meet held Memorial Day at Cozad, NE. Garry threw the discus 150 feet, six and one/half inches, which exceeded the record by 11 inches. With his best throw of the season, Garry realized his ambition to exceed 150 feet. As a member of the Southwest Iowa Track Club, Garry participated in the junior division, which was for boys under 18 years of age.

On Tuesday of last week the outlying schools of the Mount Ayr Community school district held a conference track meet on the local track. The event was sponsored by Chet ROED, coach of the Raiders, and Dale GEISE, physical education instructor. The Maloy Junior High, with 42 points, won the conference championship by taking three places in the last event - the pole vault.
