Fire of undetermined origin caused the total loss of a barn and a crib on the Frank McDONALD farm, five miles northwest of
Diagonal, Saturday afternoon. Some hay, grain, implements and two calves were lost with the barn. A plow and tractor near the
barn and crib were extensively damaged. The crib contained several hundred bushels of sealed corn and some corn that was
not sealed. Jack D. SHIFLETT, operator of the farm, stated that he had been in the barn to get a hammer a short while
before the fire. The two small SHIFLETT children who were at the barn reported that they heard a loud noise, saw the
flames and then ran to the house to get help to try and save the calves. Mr. SHIFLETT, who had gone to Diagonal, said he
heard of the fire as soon as he reached town. When he returned home it was too late to save anything.
