RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 2, 2001

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Ringgold county's upturn in population between 1990 and 2000 was the first time since the period between 1910 and 1920 that the county population has grown. Ringgold county's current population of 5,469 is an increase from 1990 but the 1870 population of 5,691 is the next comparable population total.

A Ringgold county native will be among people on hand for the dedication Wednesday, August 15, of a memorial to a crew of three U.S. Navy airmen who were killed after being captured on Ishigaki, a Japanese island about 265 miles southwest of Okinawa. The memorial is dedicated to the crew who flew from the carrier USS Makassar Strait, where Loren ELLIOTT of Mesa, AZ, was stationed during World War II. Warren LOYD, one of the crew who was killed in a most brutal way, was a close friend of ELIIOTT.

Paul RAMSEY'S dream that young people might have the opportunity to experience farm life as he did in the 1930s in the Lesanville in Ringgold county are coming closer to being realized. The RAMSEY Farm at Lesanville, located five miles east of Mount Ayr, is designed to be a working and living history farm depicting farm life in the early to mid-1900s with particular emphasis on the 1930s.

Some $3,000 was raised at the benefit to help the Bo and Judy CLYMER family raise money to pay for the funeral expenses for their daughter, Missy CLYMER, formerly of Tingley. A benefit for Martha RICKER of Mount Ayr was held Saturday at the Mount Ayr American Legion building. A supper was served followed by an auction which took several hours to complete. RICKER has been diagnosed with leukemia and is receiving treatment for the blood disease. The money raised will help the family with medical and related expenses. Martha and her husband, Brent, have three children.

Longtime bloodmobile volunteer Erin DOOLITTLE was recognized Monday at the blood drive with a service plaque and flowers for her time and service. DOOLITTLE has been a dedicated volunteer since 1992.
