Dedication and open house for the Mount Ayr Community junior high-senior high school building will be held Sunday,
April 5, from 2 to 5 p.m. here in Mount Ayr. The dedication program is set first, with Dr. Robert Benton, state
superintendent of schools, acting as guest speaker. Following the dedication program, the building will be open
for touring, with board of education and student council members serving as hosts and hostesses. The new building,
completed in time for school opening last fall, has 98,000 square feet of floor space with adjacent concrete parking
for 285 cars. The new auditorium will seat 400 persons and the new gymnasium will seat 1,800.
Three men have been arrested, charged with theft in the first degree and are now being held in the Ringgold County jail
following the theft of over $30,000 wroth of equipment from Bushman Equipment, Inc., in Mount Ayr last week. Being held
under $10,000 bail here are Martin NEER, 21, of Lacona; Stanley R. LONG, 24, of Lacona; and Kelly HILPIPER, 24, of
Des Moines. Bond was set in appearance here before Magistrate J. N. CHICKEN.
Grass fires called Mount Ayr volunteer firemen out six times in three days, March 25-27. The largest amount of damage
was 5935 acres of grass and brush burned at the Tom GREENE farm residence three miles west of Mount Ayr. On Wednesday,
March 25, there was a fire at 12:25 p.m. three miles west of Mount Ayr on a road right-of-way. On Thursday there was
a grass fire at 3:55 p.m. at the Ed STILL rental property southeast of Mount Ayr in the Caledonia vicinity. Earlier in
the day at 10:50 a.m. fire was discovered on the Ringgold Trailway leading into Poe Hollow Park just east of Mount Ayr.
Then on Friday a fire occurred at Tom GREENE'S. At 8:15 p.m. grass and timber burned at the Murray SHAHA property 12
miles southeast of Mount Ayr. The only loss in any of the cases was of grass, timber and brush.
Kenneth SMITH of Blockton was elected as president of the Ringgold County Pork Producers at a board of directors
meeting held Monday evening, March 16, at the Extension office in Mount Ayr.
Another new business has opened in Mount Ayr since the beginning of the year. Chuck WASKE opened Waske Welding and
Machine Shop along Highway 2 in the old Ames Cross building officially March 16.
