Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Homecoming activities are underway at Diagonal Community high school with the theme for the celebration this year as "Arms Wide Open." Junior and senior members of the homecoming court include Shauna KILGORE, Abby STEPHENS, Shelly YOUNG, Tonya ANDERSON, Wes COOPER, Wes STARLIN, Jason SMITH and Sean STEPHENS. Sophomore and freshmen couples in the court include sophomores Renae SMITH and Cody WERNER and Freshmen Danielle NEWTON and Alex STEPHENS. Crown bearers will be Gabriel JENKINS and Heath GARRETT.

A new scorer's table is in place in the Diagonal community high school gymnasium this week through the help of two donors, Firstar Bank and Coca-Cola.

For the first time in several years, a Ringgold county student will be taking part in a student exchange program as an exchange student instead of as a member of a host family for students from other countries. Misty Lea ERICKSON, a sophomore at Mount Ayr Community high school, will be taking part in the Iowa People to People Student Ambassador program to Australia this summer. ERICKSON is the daughter of Doug and Robin SCHWANDT of Mount Ayr.

For the second straight year, the Mount Ayr Community quiz bowl team has captured the championship of the Pride of Iowa conference quiz bowl. In the four matches, no school ever challenged the MACHS team of Elijah TERRELL, Sean KILGORE, Janice WEDDLE, Clara TERRELL, Kyle FORD and Joey RUSH, according to sponsor Brian WEIDENTHALER.

Mount Ayr Community's jazz band opened its season Saturday at the state high school jazz band competition at Hoover high school in Des Moines. The jazz band, directed by Greg STORHOFF, received a division II rating from the judges at the contest. One judge gave them a division I rating and the other two judges gave II ratings just one point from the top mark.

Amy HYNEK of Ringgold county was one of 26 4-H'ers selected to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA in November. HYNEK is the daughter of Bill and Angie HYNEK of Ellston.

Local hoop shoot winners in Diagonal were Tay McDONALD, Brandi GOODALE and JoElla GOODMAN in the eight-nine-year-old category; Jeff STARLIN, Tony WILEY, Miki GOODALE and Kaylin BERGER in the 10-11-year-old category; and Shaun WALKUP, Jason WORTMAN, Whitney WOLF and Jacqueline SNYDER in the 12-13-year-old category.
