RINGGOLD COUNTY FAIR NEWS
Royalty at the 1985 Ringgold County Fair included Michelle CAMPBELL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doyle CAMPBELL of
Mount Ayr, first runner-up; Lori KINTON, daughter of Reverends Phil and Doris KINTON of Mount Ayr, fair queen;
and Vanette HUNT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank HUNT of Diagonal, second runner-up. KINTON will continue on to
compete in the Iowa State Fair queen contest later this month at the state fair in Des Moines.
Among top livestock winners in the 1985 Ringgold County Fair were Jason LYNCH, son of Mr. and Mrs. David LYNCH
of Maloy, who showed the supreme champion heifer and a purebred Charolais; Eddie McCREARY, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jim McCREARY of rural Mount Ayr, who showed the grand champion individual market pig; and Amy AKERS, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Monte AKERS of Kellerton, who showed the grand champion market lamb and who also had the top pen of
three in the sheep competition. Advancing to the Iowa State Fair from the Bill Riley State Fair Talent Search
program at the fair Sunday night were Stephanie SUMMEY of Denison in the senior division and Erika SHIELDS of
Mount Ayr in the sprout division. Selected for the Iowa State Fair as contestants or alternates in the fashion
revue and clothing section contests were Kristy SHAHA, Bobbi HUNT, Lesa STEPHENS and Beth MARTIN.
Benton tractor pullers won three divisions of the Iowa Garden Tractor Pullers Association sanctioned garden
tractor pull held as the first grandstand attraction of the Ringgold County Fair Sunday afternoon. Tractor
pullers competed in nine categories, with Mike SWANK of Benton and Kelly GRAHAM of Benton among the first-place
winners in the pull.
After several hundred volunteer man hours and about $2,000 in concrete and miscellanous expenses, the restoration
of the Tingley Cemetery is about one-half complete. A July work-week, under the supervision of Eighme Mounument
company, brought out local volunteers who reset 73 falling or leaning stones in the oldest section of the cemetery.
Dr. Carlin LAWHEAD, a Muscatine dentist and former Mount Ayr resident, was 533rd out of 7,147 runners in a seven-mile
Bix run in Davenport Saturday, July 28. LAWHEAD covered the course in 45 minutes, 45 seconds.
Father John ZEITLER, newly appointed member of the team ministry of the Leon Region, assumed pastoral duties for the
Catholic parishes of Mount Ayr and Maloy on July 21.
