Couple's granddaughter serving in Middle East
A Mount Ayr couple received Christmas greetings from the Middle East this year because their granddaughter is serving in
the Air National Guard there. Joe and Cleone THOMPSON of Mount Ayr received a Christmas card that shows Santa's sleigh
being pulled by a group of camels across the desert sands. Angela L. THOMPSON is the daughter of Larry and Leta THOMPSON
and grew up in Grant City, MO, where she still has an apartment. THOMPSON served with the Air Force in the Gulf War
and is now overseas for duty with the Air National Guard. Early in her latest deployment she wrote back telling about
her experience. "I was surprised -- it is quite beautiful here," she wrote. "I got to see some camels on my drive to
work the other day. Too bad I didn't have my camera with me. Hopefully I'll get some pictures before I leave here.
"We work for four days then take one off, then work for four more. I don't mind the hectic work schedule because the
time seems to go by quicker. I'm looking forward to being back home. "Yesterday it got up to 133 degrees which is hot,
but it didn't seem that hot. I guess it's because it's a dry heat. We had a sand storm yesterday, too, so it was a rough
day, but I look at it as a new experience. "I'm glad that we are here because I feel what we are doing is making a
difference. "Our job here is to support hose in the dangerous areas by sending supplies and more troops, so I feel
my job here is important," she wrote.
