SERVICE NEWS ~ OPERATIONS SPECIALIST LINDSAY SMITH

Coast Guard Seaman Operations Specialist Lindsay M. SMITH, daughter of David and Karmen SMITH of New London, has graduated from Operations Specialist school at the training center at Petalumna, CA.

SMITH was taught to perform functions ranging from search and rescue and law enforcement case execution to air control and intelligence analysis.

As an Operations Specialist, she will operate the most advanced tactical computer systems the Coast Guard has, incorporating satellite communications, global positioning navigation, electronic charting systems to re-time target acquisition, tracking and identification utilizing an array of communitcations systems, senors and computers.

She will now be reporting to USCG Sector Lower Mississippi River in Memphis, TN.

SMITH is a 2004 graduate of New London High School and joined the Coast Guard in July 2004.

She is the granddaughter of Jerry and Jean BARKER of Mount Pleasant and the great-granddaughter of Guelda BARKER of Mount Ayr.

Smith awarded war on terror medal

SNOS Lindsay SMITH, United States Coast Guard, of New London, was awarded the Global War on Terrorism service medal recently.

SMITH is the daughter of David and Karmen SMITH of New London, the granddaughter of Jerry and Jean BARKER of Mount Pleasant and the great-granddaughter of Guelda BARKER of Mount Ayr.

To be awarded the medal, a medical service member must perform duty in a designated anti-terrorism operation for a period of either 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days of duty on or after September 11, 2001.

SMITH is an operations specialist currently stationed at U.S. Coast Guard sector lower Mississippi River in Memphis, TN, working in search and rescue/communications and intelligence.

She was also directly involved in the coordinations of search and rescue operations for Huricanes Katrina and Wilma.
