Payne retires from Coast Guard reserves
Robert PAYNE, formerly of Ellston and a graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school in 1973, retired on August 1, 2008, as
a Master Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard/Reserve. PAYNE graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in
1977 and entered active duty branch of the U.S. Coast Guard on June 5,1979. He received an honorable discharge in 1983
and became a Coast Guard reservist. During his nearly 30 years of service he received the following honors and awards:
Coast Guard good conduct medal, Coast Guard good conduct award (seven times), bicentennial unit commendation, Coast Guard
meritorious unit commendation, humarnitarian service medal (two times), National Defense Service medal (two times),
Coast Guard unit commendation award, Armed Forces Reserve medal, Hourglass device for Armed Forces Reserve medal, Coast
Guard meritorious team commendation, commandant's letter of commendation, DOT outstanding unit award, mobilization device
for Armed Forces Reserve medal, Armed Forces Service medal, United States Air Force achievement medal and Coast Guard
presidential unit citation. PAYNE presently is married to Carol Ann LANE and has two sons, Travis Lee, who is a
sophomore at Northwest Missouri State University, and William Matthew, who is a junior at Maryville high school in Maryville,
MO. They live in Maryville, where PAYNE has been employed by the Energizer Battery Company for the past 24 years.
