RINGGOLD COUNTY, IOWA and THE MEXICAN WAR
From The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in Miscellaneous Organizations
The area which would later become Texas had been considered by the Spanish conquerors of Mexico as
a great wasteland and remained unpopulated, considering it as a buffer zone against the American settlements of Louisiana.
Upon Mexico gaining independence from Spain in 1821, the newly formed republic invited colonization of the area of Texas
by giving a large land gront to Moses AUSTIN of Connecticut with the condition that he would establish a colony of
300 American families. Moses' son Stephen AUSTIN confirmed this grant and enlarged the colonization to 500 American
families. By 1823, the American colonization overshadowed the Mexican population in Texas. The American Texans, comprising
mostly of immigrants from the southern states with the majority coming from Tennessee, soon achieved a stat of semi-independence
which grew into an armed revolt against the parent Republic of Mexico in 1835. The Texans were led by Sam HOUSTIN,
ex-congressman and ex-governor of Tennessee. Any chance of reconciliation was lost when General Antonio Lopez de SANTA ANNA
(1794-1876) and 8,000 Mexicans
under his command defeated and slaughtered the Texans at the Alamo. Although the bloody battle lasted for little more than
an hour, it was an event which would forever alter history.Among the slain at the Alamo was Colonel
David CROCKETT of Tennessee and sixteen of his "Tennessee Boys" who volunteered to defend the post at San Antonio. A legend
in his own time, Col. CROCKETT was highly regarded by the Americans as a favorite son. A man who, although grossly undereducated,
earned a seat in the United States Senate. After losing his Senate seat, Col. CROCKET was allegedly to say, "You can all
go to hell. I'm going to Texas."Colonel Jim BOWIE, considered to be the most dangerous man alive at the time,
was like Davey CROCKETT, an aging legend. Col. BOWIE was in command of the Alamo at the beginning of the Mexican siege, but
an injury two days into the ensuing battle which was compounded by a chronic illness, forced Col. BOWIE to retire to his
sick bed where he spent the last eleven days of the thirteen-day siege.William Barret TRAVIS assumed
command of the Alamo when Jim BOWIE retired to his sick bed. TRAVIS, a twenty-six-year-old cavalry Colonel from South
Carolina, held off SANTA ANNA with his command of 187 volunteers, comprising of a handful of professional soldiers and
a majority of Mexican and American farmers who settled in and around San Antonio. On the last day of
the siege, Col. TRAVIS knew the end was near. Drawing a line in the soil before him with the tip of his sword, Col. TRAVIS
faced his men and said, "Those of you prepared to give their lives in freedom's cause, come over to me."
All but one man answered Col. TRAVIS' call. Even the ailing Jim BOWIE asked that his cot be carried across the line.
In the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, March 6th, 1836, SANTA ANNA'S army began scaling the high stone walls of the
Alamo. Col. TRAVIS was one of the first to die in the defense of independence. Jim BOWIE was murdered as he lay in his sick
bed. Davey CROCKETT lay with with all of the other men. There were no survivors but during the pre-dawn hours of March 6th,
these men took their rightful place as some of the most courageous freedom fighters in the annals of American history.Fueled with anger and resentment, the Americans embraced the motto "Remember the Alamo!" The Alamo was
avenged in April of 1836 when General Sam HOUSTON's small army defeated and nearly annihilated SANTA ANNA'S men at San Jacinto.
Samuel B. RINGGOLD (1796-1946), a son of Samuel RINGGOLD who was a U.S. Congressman from Maryland and
the younger brother of Rear Admiral Cadwallader RINGGOLD, graduated 5th in a class of 23 at West Point. He was commissioned
as a Second Lieutenant in the Artillery and seved on the staff of General Winfield SCOTT. RINGGOLD adapted what was
known as the Ringgold military saddle and artillery techniques, re-writing the Army's manuel for artillery which
was adapted by the Army as "Instructions for Field Artillery" on March 6, 1845. Consequently, RINGGOLD was promoted to the
rank of major in acknowledgement of his military innovations. Major RINGGOLD, serving under
General Zachary TAYLOR's occupational force in Texas, led 2,400 troops to Fort Texas. On May 8, 1845 Major Ringgold
and his men were engaged By Mexican General Mariano ARISTA and his force of 3,800 men at the Battle of Palo Alto. During
the Battle Major RINGGOLD was mortally wounded by cannon fire, mangling his legs just below the crotch. Refusing to
leave the field, Major RINGGOLD held on to his command as his flying artillery tactics won the battle for the Americans.
Major RINGGOLD survived three days, during which time he debriefed on the battle. He died in
Port Isabel, Texas, May 11, 1846.Major RINGGOLD's bravery was a boost to the military and
the American morale throughout the Mexican War. He was commemorated by the 4th verse of Maryland, My Maryland,
scores of songs, poems, and plays. Cities and counties were named in his honor, including Ringgold, the
Catoosa County seat of Georgia; Ringgold, Louisana; Ringgold, Virginia; Ringgold Township in Pennsylvania;
and, Ringgold County, Iowa.

The Republic of Texas was founded with General HOUSTON as President. Almost immediately, the Texans sought annexation to the
United States. On March 1, 1845, President TYLER gave his assent. Texas formally joined the Union on July 4th of 1845.
Naturally, Mexico wasn't about to grant her blessing.
With the endorsement of an Act of Congress on May 13, 1846, President POLK asked for the raising of
eighty-six and a half regiments to serve in the Mexican War. The Territory of Iowa's quota under President POLK's requisition was one
regiment of infantry. The Iowa Regiment composed of ten companies was organized at Fort Atkinson, Iowa, and ready for service by June 26, 1846. Only
one company from Iowa engaged the Mexican Army in an actual conflict, Company K of the U.S. 15th Infantry Regiment, which was victorious at the Battle of
Cerro Gordo, April of 1847. 40% of Company K was lost during combat and to disease. At the Battle of Cerro Gordo, Major
Frederick Mills and Captain Edwin Guthrie were killed. The Treaty of Guadalupe, signed
on February 2, 1848, ended the Mexican War. It is the oldest treaty still in force between American and Mexico.
In recognition of service during the War, over 14 million acres of Iowa land was granted to
Mexican War Veterans.
Fort Atkison, pictured above, was built to protect the Winnebago Nation during their removal from Wisconsin, and
was completed in the summer of 1842. Fort Atkinson. Located in Winneshiek County, Iowa, Fort Atkinson was abandoned February 14, 1849.
