NICHOLAS DUROS
1920 - 1986
Nicholas DURO, son of Tony and Arie May (STUTZMAN) DUROS was born January 18, 1920,
Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa. At the age of 18, he enlisted with the Iowa National
Guard in 1938 and was stationed at Camp Dodge, serving with Troop I, 3rd Squadron of
the 113th Cavalry. On October 31, 1942, Nicholas enlisted in the U.S. Army for the duration of World
War II, seeing action in central Europe and was honorably discharged from service on January 30, 1946.
Nicholas was awarded the Bronze Star. Nicholas re-enlisted December 1, 1948, and was honorably discharged
from service September 8, 1952.
Nicholas married Evelynne Aldene HOOD June 26, 1946, Rock Island, Illinois.
Nicholas died at the age of 66 on March 7, 1986, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. He was interred at
Rose Hill Cemetery.
