THE 9th IOWA CAVALRY

The 9th Iowa Cavalry was organized under special order of the War Department on September 7, 1863. The 12 Companies of the 9th Iowa Cavalry were ordered into quarters at Davenport, Iowa, - Camp Roberts, later renamed Camp Kinsman - by Governor KIRWOOD between August 15 and November 1, 1863. Lieutenant Colonel William N. GRIER of the U.S. Army on November 30, 1863. A large number of men who wished to join the 9th reported at Camp Roberts after the ranks had been filled, and, since they could not be mustered into the regiment they were assigned to other Iowa regiments.

The 9th Iowa Cavalry suffered the loss of 19 enlisted men who either were killed in action or died of their wounds; and 165 enlisted men who died of disease; a total lost of 184 fatalities.

JACOBS, Benjamin E. of F., 1st Lieutenant. Age 35 of Shueyville, Iowa; nativity - Virginia. Appointed 1st Lieutenant on November 30, 1863; mustered into service on November 30, 1863. Mustered out of service on March 23, 1866 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

HOLMES, Hugh T. Holmes, 2nd Lieutenant. Age 23 of Davenport, Iowa; nativity - Kentucky. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on November 30, 1863; mustered into service on November 30, 1863. Promoted to Captain of Company D of the 9th Iowa cavalry on November 6, 1865.

AYRES, Abraham, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Ohio. Enlisted at the age of 20 as a Private on August 23, 1863; mustered into service on August 23, 1863. Mustered out of service at Davenport, Iowa on May 20, 1865.

FICKLE, Oliver, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Enlisted at the age of 38 as a Private on August 23, 1863; mustered into service on August 23, 1863. Mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas on March 23, 1866.

HILL, Samuel, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Iowa. Enlisted at the age of 33 as a Teamster on August 23, 1863; mustered into service on September 5, 1863. Mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas on March 23, 1866.

MARTS, Charles, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Ohio. Enlisted at the age of 44 as a Private on September 5, 1863; mustered into service on September 5, 1863. Promoted to Full Teamster. Mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas on March 23, 1866.

SIMPSON, Charles, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Maine. Enlisted at the age of 38 as a Private on August 19, 1863; mustered into service on May 4, 1864. Promoted to Full Saddler. Mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas on March 23, 1866.

TANNER, William, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Kentucky. Enlisted at the age of 38 as a Quartermaster Sergeant on October 3, 1863; mustered into service on October 3, 1863. Mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas on March 23, 1866.

  YOUNG, John L. Young, Captain. From Leon, Decatur County, Iowa; nativity - Ohio. Appointed as Captain on August 1, 1863; mustered into service on November 30, 1863. Promoted to Major of 2nd Battalion on October 6, 1865. Mustered out of service on February 28, 1866 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

REIGART, Thomas J., 1st Lieutenant. Age 20 from Ottumwa, Iowa; nativity - Pennsylvania. Appointed 1st Lieutenant on August 21, 1863; mustered into service on November 30, 1863. Resigned May 22, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

WOOD, William H., 2nd Lieutenant. From Vinton, Iowa; nativity - Ohio. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on August 21, 1863; mustered into service on November 30, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on May 27, 1865; promoted to Captain on October 15, 1865. Mustered out of service on February 28, 1866, at Little Rock, Arkansas.

COSSAIRT, George W., Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted at the age of 16 on December 4, 1861. Discharged for disability Oct. 14, 1862. See Company G, 4th Iowa Infantry. George was born on September 5, 1846, and died April 2, 1865 with interment at Middle Fork Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.

  JOHNSON, Calvin R. Johnson, Captain. Age 44 from Hopeville, Iowa; nativity - Ohio. Appointed Captain on September 30, 1863; mustered into service on September 30, 1863. Resigned on December 14, 1864.

BRAMHALL, Eleazer or Elezar S., 1st Lieutenant. Age 27 from Summerset, Iowa; nativity - Ohio. Appointed 1st Lieutenant on September 12, 1863; mustered into service on November 30, 1863. Resigned on December 20, 1864.

COOK, Elihu L., 2nd Lieutenant. Age 24 from Salem, Iowa; nativity - Ohio. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on October 16, 1863; mustered on November 30, 1863. Resigned on October 22, 1864.

BRIDGES, Edward, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted at the age of 18 as a Private on September 8, 1863; mustered into service on September 8, 1863. Died of disease at Devall's Bluff, Arkansas on July 1, 1864.

BRIDGES, Jackson, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - Kentucky. Enlisted at the age of 41 as a Private on September 8, 1863; mustered into service on September 8, 1863. Died of disease at St. Louis, Missouri on January 3, 1864. Interment at Arsenal Island at St. Louis, Missouri.
