THE 8th IOWA CAVALRY

The 8th Iowa Cavalry was organized under special authority of the War Department on April 6, 1863. The 12 companies of the 8th Iowa Cavalry were ordered into quarters near Davenport at Camp Roberts by Iowa Governor KIRKWOOD between August 13 to September 1, 1863. Lieutenant Colonel William N. GRIER of the U.S. Army mustered the 8th into service. The 8th Iowa Cavalry was the most popular regiment of the soldiers who enliasted with the number of volunteers out-numbering what could be accepted into service.

ENGAGEMENTS:

  • Battle of Resaca was a part of the Atlanta Campaign, waged in both Gordon and Whitfield Counties of Georgia from May 13 to May 15 of 1864. The battle ended inconclusively with no advantage to neither side.

  • Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was a part of the Altanta Campaign and found on June 27, 1864 southwest of Kennesaw Mountain near Marietta, Goergia. It was a rare Confederate victory during the Atlanta Campaign, however after the battle both sides sat at a stalemate. Historians have judged General William T. SHERMAN's attack as a futile waste of lives against the firmy entrenched Confederate forces. SHERMAN believed that his actions were justified because he proved to Genearl JOHNSTON that he was not afraid to fight.

  • 2nd Battle of Franklin was a part of the Franklin-Nashville Campaign and was fought at Franklin, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864, The Battle of Franklin was one of the worst disasters for the CSA, losing six generals who were either killed or mortally wounded, eight wounded, and on captured along with 53 regimental commanders who were casualties, 1,750 men killed and 3,800 who were wounded. Subsequent loss at the Battle of Nashville on December 15 and 16, 1864, was the beginning of the end for Confederate John Bell HOOD's Army of Tennessee as a fighting force. More of General HOOD's men were killed in five hours at Franklin than in the two-day Battle of Shiloh.

  • Battle of Nashville, a part of the Franklin-Nashville Campain, was fought at Nashville, Tennessee, on December 15 and 16, 1864. The Battle of Nashville was one of the largest Union victories of the Civil War. As a result of the Battle of Nashville, the second largest Confederate force, the Army of Tennessee, was destroyed, never to fight again.

The 8th Iowa Cavalry suffered the loss of 15 enlisted men who were either killed in action or who died of their wounds; 3 officers and 176 enlisted men who died of disease; a total loss of 194 fatalities.
