Of the 10 companies of the 46th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Company "E" consisted of soldiers from Linn and Ringgold Counties, however some Ringgold County soldiers were assigned to other Companies. The short time allowed for recruiting the 100-day regiments and the fact that the State of Iowa had already furnished more than the quota required of her, it was necessary to quickly raise the number of men needed to serve as rear area garrison troops. Nine of the companies of the 46th, which included Company "E", were ordered into quarters at Camp McClellan near Davenport by Governor KIRKWOOD on May 30, 1864. Captain Alexander CHAMBERS of the U.S. Army mustered the troops into service on June 10, 1864. Four days later the regiment was headed South. The regiment garrisoned strategic points on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.

the 46th suffered the loss of 6 enlisted men who were either killed in action of died of their wounds; 25 enlisted men who died of disease; a total loss of 31 fatalities.
