The 3rd Iowa Cavalry was organized under President Abraham LINCOLN's proclamation dated July 23, 1861. The twelve
preliminary companies of the 3rd were under the charge of Honorable Cyrus BUSSEY who was acting Aide-de-Camp to
Governor Samuel J. KIRKWOOOD. Several of these partially organized companies had performed efficient service as
the Southern Iowa Border Patrol. The twelve companies arrived from August 3rd to September 13th of 1861 with
Keokuk, Iowa, as the designated rendezvous point. Captain Charles C. SMITH and Lieutenant Ira K. KNOX of the U.S. Army
re-mustered the regiment into service between August 30 and September 14, 1861.
Siege of Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi, was the final military action in the Vicksburg Campaign. Afer two
major assaults on May 19th and May 22nd, the seige began on May 25th of 1863. With no re-enforcement and supplies
nearly exhausted, the garrison ultimately surrendered after a 40-day siege on July 4th. This, along with the capture of
Port Hudson on July 9th, gave Union forces command of the Mississippi River, which was held throughout the remainder of
the Civil War. As a result of this action, the city of Vicksburg refused to celebrate the 4th of July for the next
80 years.
The 3rd Iowa Cavalry suffered the loss of 5 officers and 79 enlisted men who were either killed in action or who died of
their wounds; and 4 officers and 230 enlisted men who died of disease; a total loss of 318 fatalities.
