THE 29th IOWA INFANTRY

The ten companies of the 29th Iowa Infantry were commissioned to rendezvous at Camp Dodge located at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Governor KIRKWOOD issued the order on August 15, 1862 and Lieutenant Horace BROWN mustered the troops into service.

At Helena, Arkansas, over 400 men of the 29th were on the sick list. A great number of these men died and many others were discharged because of their illnesses.

ENGAGEMENTS:

  • Battle of Helena, Arkansas, was fought on July 4, 1863. A Union victory, the result was securing eastern Arkansas firmly into Union control.

  • Battle of Fourche Bayou, Arkansas, was fught on September 10, 1863. A Union victory, the result sealed the fate of Little Rock, Arkansas falling into Union control. The Union also gained control of the Mississippi River, isolating it from the rest of the South.

  • The Skirmish at Terre Noir Creek, Arkansas, also known as the Skirmish at Atoine Creek, was fought on April 2nd of 1864, a part of the Camden Campaign.

  • The Engagement at Elkin's Ford, Arkansas was fought on the Little Missouri River on April 3 & 4th of 1864.

  • The skirmishes at Camden Road, Arkansas, were fought on April 15 to April 20th, 1864.

  • The engagement at Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas, was found on April 30, 1864, a part of the Camden Campain.

  • The Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama, was fought on August 5, 1864. A Union victory, sealing off the entire Gulf Coast east of Texas to southern shipment of supplies. This victory also assured President LINCOLN's successful second election into office in the fall of 1864.

    The 29th Iowa Infantry suffered the loss of 1 officer and 42 enlisted men who were either killed in action or died of their wounds; the loss of 1 officer and 266 enlisted men who died of disease; for a total of 310 fatalities.

    HUGGINS, Alexander B., Captain. Enlisted as Captain at the age of 28 on August 9, 1862 at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Commissioned in Company G of the 29th Iowa Infantry on December 1, 1862. Discharged from service on December 3, 1863.

    JOHNSTON, Andrew, Lieutenant. Enlisted as 1st Lieutenant at the age of 31 on August 9, 1862 at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Commissioned in Company G of the 29th Iowa Infantry on December 1, 1862. Promoted to Full Captain December 3, 1863. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    McFARLAND, John, Lieutenant. Enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant at the age of 40 on August 9, 1862 at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Commissioned in Company G of the 29th Iowa Infantry on December 1, 1862. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on December 3, 1863. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    ADAMSON, Samuel, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - North Carolina. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 41 as Private on February 27, 1864. Mustered into service April 11, 1864. Died of disease at Little Rock, Arkansas on June 24, 1864; interment at National Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas, section 1, grave 622.

    ADDINGTON, Noah, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted as a Wagoner at the age of 44 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service November 18, 1862. Died of disease at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri on February 12, 1863.

    ADDINGTON, Sylvester H., Redding, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 18 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service November 18, 1862. Died of disease at Helena, Arkansas on February 27, 1863.

    AMARINE, Davidson, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Natvitiy - Ohio. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 31 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. Wounded at Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas on April 30, 1864. Mustered out of service at Davenport, Iowa on May 23, 1865.

Was wounded and captured on April 2, 1864 at Terre Noir Creek, Arkansas. Died of wounds while held as a prisoner of war at Camden, Arkansas on June 19, 1864.

    BENNETT, Jesse T., Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Pennsylvania. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 31 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862.     BENTON, Thomas Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa. Enlisted as a Colonel at the age of 46 on August 10, 1862. Commissioned to Company S of the 29th Iowa Infantry on December 1, 1862. Commanded the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Arkansas Expedition from August 4 to October 8, 1863. Commanded the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, VII Corps of the Department of Arkansas from November 16 - November 26, 1864. Promoted to Brevet Brigadier-General on December 15, 1864. From January 5 to January 15, 1865 commanded the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division of the VII Corps, Department of Arkansas. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    CONLEY, Ezra, Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 19 on February 29, 1864; mustered into service on April 11, 1864. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    CONLEY, James, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 22 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. Killed in action at Helena, Arkansas on July 4, 1863. The Diagonal G.A.R. Post was named in Pvt. CONLEY's honor.

    FRAZIER, Henry formerly of Dan Webster, Henry County, Indiana. Enlisted at Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa at the age of 19 as a Private on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. Mustered out of service on August 10, 1865 at New Orleans, Louisiana.

    FRAZIER, James formerly of Dan Webster, Henry County, Indiana; residence Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa. Enlisted at Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, age 19 as a Private on August 13, 1862; mustered into service on November 9, 1862. The History of Henry County, Indiana states Private James FRAZIER was captured at Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas. April 30, 1864, and held in Confederate prison at Tyler, Texas; released from February 26, 1865. Mustered out May 23, 1865. Whereas the American Civil War Soldiers database states that Private James FRAZIER died of disease at Memphis, Tennessee on March 1, 1863. James' brother William W. FRAZIER of Harrison County, Iowa, enlisted at Mount Ayr on August 13, 1862 at the age of 20 as a Private, serving with Company C of the 29th Iowa Infantry, and received a disability discharge after being wounded by a bursting shell at Memphis, Tennessee on May 13, 1862. Another brother Thomas FRAZIER enlisted at Harrison County at the age of 28 on November 5, 1864; mustered into service with Company C of the 13th Iowa Infantry; mustered out of service at Davenport, Iowa on June 12, 1865. Samuel H. FRAZIER, another brother, enlisted as a Private at the age of 23 on August 26, 1862; was wounded at Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas on April 30, 1864; and mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    FRAIZER, Nathan, formerly of Dan Webster, Henry County, Indiana; residence at Ringgold County, Iowa and brother of James, William W., Thomas, and Samuel FRAZIER. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 18 on February 5, 1864; mustered into service on February 5, 1864. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    GLEASON, Areal or Ariel, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Ohio. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 30 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. Received a disability discharge at Keokuk, Iowa on April 23, 1863.

    GRAY, Heman C., Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Pennsylvania. Enlisted as a Private at the age of 31 on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. Promoted to Full Corporal on July 13, 1863; promoted to Full 4th Sergeant on July 1, 1864; promoted to Full 3rd Sergent on July 16, 1865; promoted to Full 2nd Sergeant on August 9, 1865. Slightly wounded at Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas April 30, 1864. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.

    GRIM, Henry C., Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Illinois. Enlisted at the age of 21 as a 4th Sergeant on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. On April 30, 1864 was wounded and captured at Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas. Died as a P.O.W. of wounds while held at Princeton, Arkansas on May 14, 1864.

    GUSTIN, Bennager, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Indiana. Enlisted at the age of 21 as a Private on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 10, 1862. Died of disease at Columbus, Kentucky on January 28, 1863.

    HAGANS, Bird, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Nativity - Missouri. Enlisted at the age of 18 years as a Private on August 9, 1862; mustered into service on November 18, 1862. Mustered out of service at New Orleans, Louisiana on August 10, 1865.
