"My mother was Vera LeElla Lutz, daughter of Cyrus E. and Laura Jane (Kimball) Lutz. She was born in Ringgold Co., near
Kellerton, Nov. 27, 1904 and died Oct 5, 2001 also in Pueblo, Pueblo County, CO. Both she and John are interred in Lamar,
Prowers County, CO.
"Vera’s parents moved from Kellerton to rural Hartford Kansas (Eagle Creek twp) in 1910 and Vera started school there at
age 6. In 1916 when she was 12, her parents moved back to Kellerton, where she faced the prospect of attending a rural
school with ALL boys.
"Her mother asked the Kellerton supt. that if she could pass the high school entrance examination, could she enter high
school instead. He agreed, and she did. This made her graduating at 16 in
1920. She then attended Normal School at Mt.
Ayr, finishing the two year course in one year, then had to wait until her 18th birthday in 1922 before starting to
teach. She taught at Stony Point first , then Buffalo Ridge, and then moved to Ft. Collins, CO to marry John who
preceded her to Colorado."
"My father was John Baird Spencer, son of Orin Gilbert and Julia Belle (Baird) Spencer. John was born on Feb. 23, 1904
in Redding, and died on May 15, 2001 in Pueblo, Pueblo county, CO.
His siblings were:
Goldia married Roy Berry Sheumaker;
Gladys married Fred Adair;
Lyle married Mae Brott;
Clifford married a Colorado girl, Faye Higgins;
Letha married Everett Galloway;
Ida who married Raymond Hickerson.
"The Spencer family farm was east of Redding at Middlefork Twp, and the kids attended Middlefork rural school, until
their parents moved to Mt. Ayr, then John attended Mt. Ayr High School graduating in 1922."
