THE FLEMING FAMILY, circa 1870, Kellerton, Iowa

Left to Right: From left: Esther Coralinn FLEMING, born December 16, 1862; patriarch Daniel FLEMING; Andrew Ulysses FLEMING, born November 28, 1867 in Illinois and died October 2, 1953, Villisca, Iowa; Daniel's second wife Loretta (COPELAND) FLEMING, born 1826; and Livingston Alden FLEMING, born November 17, 1855 in Pennsylvania and died June 5, 1939.

Daniel FLEMING was born February 18, 1813, the son of Daniel FLEMING Sr. (1779-1846) and Nancy (HARDY) FLEMING. In 1824, Nancy divorced her husband and raised her children alone.

Daniel FLEMING married first Phebe Ann KING who was born July 30, 1813 and died shortly after the death of their daughter Mary FLEMING on July 14, 1844. She was interred at Fleming Cemetery, Harmony, Forest County Pennsylvania.

Daniel married second Loretta COPELAND. Loretta was born July 30, 1826 and died in Monroe County, Iowa in 1897.

  • Phebe Ann FLEMING
    born May 11, 1836, Pennsylvania, and died August 30, 1913, Pennsylvania
    married January 1, 1857 Benjamin Franklin DELO

    Benjamin Franklin DELO was born April 16, 1832, Pennsylvania and died June 13, 1916, Clarion, Pennsylvania. Benjamin was a distinguished Methodist Episcopal minister of the Erie Conference. Prior to her death in 1913, Phebe had been an invalid for approximately 25 years.

  • William Harrison FLEMING, born November 21, 1838; died May 20, 1862
    William enlisted as a Private on August 3, 1861, and was assigned to Company F og the Union's 5th Regiment, Excelsior Brigade. He was wounded during the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862. William died of his injuries in a Baltimore, Maryland, hospital on May 20, 1862; interment in Section A, Site 838, Loudon Park National Cemetery at Baltimore, Maryland.

     Livingston Alden FLEMING was a United Brethrean minister. The family lived next door to his son Willie in Woods County, Oklahoma for a while. By 1930, Livingston, Frances, and their granddaughter Hazel GREGORY (born circa 1915 in Iowa) were residing in Newton Township of Carroll County, Iowa.

    NOTE: Frances Jane (SHELDON) FLEMING's sister Miranda Alma SHELDON* was born January 16, 1879, and died in Florida 1948. She was married to Frank E. JACKSON, born in October 1870, Ringgold County, Iowa, and died December 27, 1955, Tampa, Florida.

    Frank E. JACKSON was the first world horseshoe pitching champion, winning the title in 1909. He won 12 more championships, defending his title six years in a row. When he wasn't pitching horseshoes, Frank farmed near Kellerton. After going broke during the Great Depression, Frank and Miranda operated a motel in Florida.

    Frances and Miranda's sister Adaline "Addie" SHELDON married Frank's brother Oscar C. JACKSON.

    The SHELDON sisters were daughters of Truman C. and Lydia Melvina (GOFF) SHELDON and had 3 brothers and six other sisters.
